I think NK's full of shit. The estimated yield of the explosion was around half a kiloton. The bomb that we dropped on Nagasaki was a plutonium weapon as well, and its yield was about 21 kilotons.

Kim Jong Il = crazy midget poser

Of course, it could have been a fizzle as well.

Reports have ranged from a half kiloton up to almost 15 kilotons, depending on who you're listening to.

I'd say it's very possible that they could be bullshitting.... But on the other hand, would they have a good reason to?

Sure it would help for deterrence, but they have to know that announcing a nuke is going to actually provoke hostile reactions, right?

Don't worry, we (Canada) just got new tanks and copters so we're in charge of this thing from now on...leave it to us!

Lol no it's not. If they really have acquired nuclear arms then everyone backs off. That's WHY nations conduct tests.

Hence the nonsense over Iran at this point in time, a good way ahead on them feasibly being able to produce a functional weapon.

they could have faked the seismic readings by having everyone in the country jump up and down at the same time.

yeah, I'm too lazy to check any sources, but iirc NK doesn't have to worry about China. It's Japan that's gonna get scared.

china's like every other fucking country with arms. They already have them, no need to worry---unless some other dipshit (enter Kim) decides to trigger another arms race. It could easily happen very soon.
They're as sick about this as rest of the civilized world right now, one could imagine.

According to the KCNA statement, no radioactive leakage had taken place as a consequence of the test.
:dork:

and what about the underground water table?
this could contaminate the water supply for the whole of the Korean peninsula and fuck up the Sea of Japan, apart from the fact that 23 million people are starving, they can spend money on this shit.

NK spends 25% of its GDP (compared with <4% for most western countries) on the military, and the best they can come up with a pissy 1/2 kiloton effort and a load of shiny tanks and crappy planes that would take it in the arse if the US ever did decide to attack...

...which would be a bad idea unless the intention was to turn a 3rd world country into a 4th world country :dork:

China is NK's ally, but even they (china) are upset with this test.

NK doesn't care about that, the essence of Juche is self reliance.

Yeah, the big picture right now is that NK has forced itself into a corner from which the only way out may feasibly be revolt or a costly war (will the US get it's hands dirty in yet another conflict even after South Korea gets irradiated?).
At this point, one route for NK is fairly sure: heavier sanctions.

What troubles me is this: there is no effective way to punish NK any more.

Sanctions will accomplish nothing - maybe more peasants will die, so what. Military invasion is not an option anymore now that they have nukes. NK does not listen to it's allies, and a regime as repressive as NK will not see a revolution any time soon.

Looks like it's game set and match for Kim.
