Securing networks

Post by CrinklyArse »

So I suspect the neighbours are stealing our wireless. I have no idea how to secure it, so I'm asking you guys.

What's the simplest/best way to secure a network? :)

make sure all of your machines have SP2 then encrypt with WPA2. hide your SSID also. there should also be a section with the number of clients allowed - set that to the number of clients in your household.

mac filtering? yeah, you can do that, but it's easy to get around. it's like 'the club' for the car. just takes a little more time to tackle that hurdle.

Juggs pretty much nailed it there, Personally I wold use 128bit WEP key encryption which would be enough to prevent the average user to getting into your network i think. Edit: Actually, After doing some research I would go with WPA....

If i wanted that extra bit of security I would permit access only to MAC addresses on my network. This is a feature you need to check with your router though.

i think it's more of a case of protecting your IP address from child pr0n surfers. be pretty fucked up if it was your IP, now wouldn't it.

Sorry, securing your network is a good thing. I was mocking 'stealing wireless', cause it's on par with the plebs who say 'I've got the Internet at home'.

I shoulda been clearer.

Tis true. It's sort of worrying. :paranoid:

imo, it's VERY worrying. could you imagine going to jail for something you didn't even fucking do? and with that on your record, you're stamped and ruined for life.

Don't forget to change the admin password of your router either.

I think Juggs and Dave pretty much covered it, but for extra fun, you can try something like this...
