DSL disconnecting randomly and with phone usage

Post by Captain »

This has constantly been happening for a year now. Sometimes it lasts for a few weeks then comes back in a bit. There's no sign of it stopping now. The DSL disconnects with every single incoming and outcoming phone call. I told my ISP's technical support and they told me it was a filter problem. I've got two phones in the house and both have filters. I've got two extra filters and I tested all sorts of combinations. Nothing worked.

But now recently, not only does a phone disconnect it (which is a pain in the fucking ass when some idiot calls 3 times in 10 minutes), now it happens completely randomly as well. Suddenly websites stop functioning and I have to close down and wait for the DSL light to turn off, then reconnect the internet.

And it's probably the ancient phone lines that this house has but my telephone provider Bell said they did linework and fixed possible issues about 3 months ago.

Wtf.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention a nice little detail. The DSL won't reconnect until the phone is no longer used. Great for those 15-minute calls.

Dialer? :o

I have a Local Area Connection and a B2B2C in my network connections. I turn on the modem and LAC is activated. Then I double-click the B2B2C icon on my desktop and it connects me to the internet.

My ISP didn't give me anything except probably herpes.

EDIT: I use WinXP SP2, that dialer wouldn't work for me. I don't even know what it does :icon32:

It sounds like your ISP's problem. Call them again.

phone takes DSL modem out of SYNC?

Post by oaktree »

This is an inside wiring problem.

Replace the microfilters you have on your phones.

If you unplug ALL phones, from the line, then play does it still occur?

if so, then a burglar alarm or some other device, fax, modem, etc. may be seizing the line (going off hook...OH)

Proper filtering to seperate out the DSL signal from the 300-hz to 4khz voice is essential to maintaining sync.

ANY phone device that is unfiltered... and I do mean the burglar alarm even if the service is not being subscribed to, can take the phone off hook.

When that happens, the load on the line changes..

When not filtered, this can disrupt the ADSL signal...it will resync again while talking...then drop again when you go back ONHOOK...

Replace filters. they are like 3 bucks each or less. VERY worth the effort.

Find a HOME-RUN filter and install it yourself.

source from telephone carrier into POTS filter(home run box)

======to NETWORK

two outputs ======== to voice devices (filtered pair)

===============out to DSL UNFILTERED pair

in your home you have typically two pair.

green/red are first pair and should be used for voice

use yellow/black for DSL signal.

Rewire up your DSL jack to have yellow/black on the MIDDLE two pins.

Yeh, it's back to normal now, has me baffled :S

There are no extra devices around, the downstairs phone is also a fax and the cordless has its own answering machine built in. Can't really test with both phones disconnected since it's always the phone that disconnects it.

I hope this keeps up, I just know it'll be back for another week pretty soon :icon8:

If you are using a cordless phone make sure it is not kept near your router/dsl modem. I had a similar (but less severe) problem which is cured now that I keep the phone in another room.

If he is using a wireless a or b router that could be the cause.

see about getting a central splitter/filter - will help more than inline filters.
