I've never played a strategy game, want to try one

Post by Tsakali_ »

so I'm an avid fps fan , and I also like racing games... I think I can be categorized an ADD gamer,(but I also fly simulations) i dunno maybe it's just a case of not knowing any better.

I was looking at Company of Heroes it's a real time strategy game http://pc.ign.com/objects/743/743961.html ..should I download the demo, or will it be like getting susi for the first time from an 'all you can eat' buffet line?

Starcraft and Age of Empires II are about the only ones I can stomach. Easy to acquire too.

edit: Real time is the way to go though, turn based games like the Civilization series is a snooze fest.

I think with a futuristic or current time theme I'll be more interested in trying it, other than that I'm not really into sword fights and dark ages

The only ones I can recommend are Starcraft or Age of Empires 2 and +

Starcraft is futuristic, and has a good story.

Age of Empires is a great strategy game, you got cool units and cool tech to reach.
And if you get bored, you can summon Ferrari with MGs and a Nuke Gun Soldier, with cheats.Age of Empire is not a "dark sword fighting game". Trust me.

Take it from an FPS gamer.

And do yourself a favor and play Fallout 2.
And Fallout.

Dawn Of War - Warhammer 40,000 RTS, fucking rules. Just watch the opening FMV movie, that'll convince you...

Start with Starcraft. :icon14:

If you've never played an RTS before, put it on easy and play through the game.

Are there some good recorded games of Dawn of War or it's expansion that I can watch? Sorta like what you could do with AOE 2, I want see Xperts go at it.

Starcraft is the best...probably always will be the most balanced, well-rounded strategy game ever. Blizzard really did a great job with that title.

There's always Red Alert 2. If you want a more recent game, I can recommend C&C: Generals Zero Hour

Oh yeah any C&C game is good.

First play the RTS Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun
Then because you love FPS, play the FPS'ed Command & Conquer: Renegade

You know what, as a matter of fact, there has been a release of all C&C games in one collection.

Command & Conquer: The First Decade,
http://www.ea.com/official/cc/firstdecade/us/index.jsp

That is 12 amazing games, for the price of one.
And by the time you are done, Command & Conquer 3 will be out, in stores.

Here's the opening FMV; game has very much the same feel.

Aye... First Decade is pretty cool because it comes with all the expansions. Yuri's Revenge and Zero Hour, for example.

Never really got into Tiberian Sun. Just didn't like it very much. It is more futuristic than the others, though.

Wot he said :icon14:

Also, try Silent Storm Gold for a bit of turn-based strategy.

Homeworld's cool too, if a little steep on the difficulty curve.

Rome: Total War is the daddy, but obviously not futuristic.

And't don't dismiss Civ 4. Huge, intricate and all consuming.

Starcraft is overrated IMO. Plus it looks like crap nowadays.

Dawn of War is good, Homeworld too, and Rome: Total war is great (although not really a traditional RTS).

wouldn't mind playing that homeworld one - but the graphics always seem to fuck up on my pc, looks like the screen is being torn across the middle.

For something completely different, try Dungeon Keeper 2.

You can't beat a game where you can slap your minions.

Try Dark Reign 1 / 2.

Dawn of War is pretty good.

Starcraft, in my opinion, is pretty meh.

Battle For Middle Earth is amazing. It kindof blurs the traditional RTS into an adventure with RPG elements. Not to mention you get to control Saromon, tree wielding cave trolls, and bulrogs.

Played all the way back through the original Dungeon Keeper last year. It was no worse for its age. Awesome games.
