Only an inept writer would use the terms interchangably; they're different components. We can't help it if you take shittily written books as fact.SOAPboy wrote:he said CPU CASEDr_Watson wrote:why do people think "CPU" and "Computer" are synonyms?
fucking tool
oh, and go look in a few networking books, they refer to CPU as the COMPUTER alot..
Need CPU case recommendations

They write like that for people with zero computer knowledge.. its mostly in the first books.. but still in them none the lessTormentius wrote:Only an inept writer would use the terms interchangably; they're different components. if your book calls a computer a cpu its written by morons for morons.
the only time any technologically educated individual should ever refer to a "computer" as a "cpu" is when they are talking about a mainframe, in which case the central server is in fact a central processing unit.
Again.. "starting" classes in networking, the books refer to it as the CPU.. why? beyond trying to keep confusing to noobs down, i have no idea..Dr_Watson wrote:way to reinforce our point.SOAPboy wrote:They write like that for people with zero computer knowledge.. its mostly in the first books.. but still in them none the lessTormentius wrote: Only an inept writer would use the terms interchangably; they're different components. Work IT man, people call it that ALL THE FUCKING TIME, why? Customers dont know any better.. and im assuming TNF is a END USER.. no point in agruing over it, its what people call it.. get over it fuck head..
I'm saying people in the business should stop propogating stupidity.SOAPboy wrote:Again.. and i've worked in IT for 8 years, have an AS in Computer Science and am going to RIT for IT with a concentration on computer networking systems... so don't try to pretend i havn't read my fare share of books, journals, and RFCs.

then you know exactly what i mean, hense you going on and on about YOU being right is stupid..
umm... no.
anytime anyone uses CPU incorrectly they get corrected because I am right. CPU is not an abbreviation for computer.
I've actually gone to the level of calling a computer supply catalog, spoke to the editor and got them to stop publishing such nonsense.
EUs don't know any better because no one told them... so tell them, rather than allow the bastardization of the vernacular to continue.

Why? You don't have to call a person a retard in order to educate them. If they refer to the CPU simply say "You mean the tower, correct? The CPU is a component inside that tower." Easily done, and most often they are happy to have learned something (it doesn't take much to entertain many users).SOAPboy wrote:no, id rather just let them think whatever.. they pay, i win, ggDr_Watson wrote:if you lack tact, then yes you will offend someone. Five seconds is hardly a waste of time. The second part of your comment is hilarious though. I've got a couple of users with similar technical aptitude.Geebs wrote:Why the FUCK would you waste time telling laymen that? My mum thinks that to install RAM in your computer, you need to download it from the internet.
Yea...I guess I don't know how to distinguish between the abbreviation CPU and the term computer, so I just use them interchangeably because I am completely technologically illiterate.
Should the terms be used interchangeably in textbooks? Of course not. But do we use slightly inaccurate shorthand in our day to day conversations all the time? Yes.
