I have a bunch of spare parts lying around that I want to make better use of. I have the following:
AMD2600+ socket A, FSB 333MHz
1 stick of 512MB RAM (333MHz?)
ATI All-In-Wonder 9800 Pro 128MB
PSU
Case
Soundcard should I need it
I will need:
Motherboard
Optical Drive
Hard Drive
So I'm wondering what kind of motherboard you would recommend (preferably with SATA connector) and even if it's possible to find a socket A mobo anymore. Is it even worth it to buy parts for an older machine? I won't be using it for heavy gaming (maybe just a second computer for a Q3 LAN or something), probably mostly as a file server to stream files to my other computers and possibly music to my living room.
The biggest question would be what your intended use for the machine is going to be.
I've got a laptop and an old built-up box sitting around here, and they're barely ever turned on. The second box is quite loud and consumes too much power to leave on permanently (if I've any conscience, anyway).
If it's to give to a relative or the kids or something that might make some sense.
You should still be able to find a few Socket A motherboards, they're still available on the web over here.
