got new video card but some games freeze

Post by Tsakali_ »

Hi there, I just upgraded from GF4200 TO A GF6600
the rest of the system:
2.4 celeron
768 mb ram
80 gig hdd

most games run nice and smoothly but someother games tempt to freeze my system up and I have to manualy reboot.

I don't know wht the story is, the game I am fighting with ATM is hitman bloodmoney, it freezes no matter what graphic settings I have set.

windows xp is fully update, so is my video card drivers and I'm running dx9.0c

this is really starting to piss me off...what's the issue here? is my v-card overheating only on some applications? wtf

maybe my soundcard is not dx9 compatible?

You don't need to nuke the drivers when you're moving from one Geforce to another, they all use the same driver base. As long as you've got the latest driver versions, you should be fine for that.

Your problem could be:
- Card overheating. Check space inside the case and temperature of other components
- Power issues. If the card has an extra power socket, make sure it's populated. Check your PSU wattage is high enough (depending on your drives, you probably want a 450W or more powering that card.
- Card seating. Is the card pushed in correctly into the motherboard socket, or is it able to move around slightly and dislodge.

My guess would be power. Failing all of this, you might have a bad card, or there could be something messed up on the software side of things, but only if your computer's in a real state...

yeah it is, as a matter of fact it only does this on newer games BUT not all dx9 games lets not point to that just yet.

Aye, 430W is the minimum for a 6600, 450 + chassis fan for an overclocked 6600GT :)

No, Actually, the recommended is a NAMEBRAND 250watt PSU, so he is close.. if you want to go with a shiet brand, 430watt will get you by.

Hmm, my Retail Plus 465W functions much better than the 350W Antec that exploded after 3 months of use :)

Udate: seems that the issue here is heat... I put a huge fan over the open case and it seems to stay stable for much longer, long enough to play for an hour or so. this kinda sucks since my video card is a virgin and should not overheat like that.

Passive means just a heatsink, no fan, cooling the chip. Active is a heatsink with a fan.

I'm starting to have fan/heating problems with my 6600. Most modern games get jerky and slow. Already looking for something to replace it. It's been in here about 8 months. I could probably replace the fan, but screw it, it gives me an excuse to replace the card. :)

Seems someone else here was having similar problems with a 6600.

I don't know about your problem specifically, but goddamn that celeron processor is a problem by itself. Celerons are complete shit. If you buy/make another computer, be sure to get an intel or and athlon

One: Cel 850 @ 1.13 ( beats out P3 1.1's )
Two: Cell 666 @ 1.2 ( same as above )
Three: Cell D 2.66 @ 4.0Ghz... Enough said :)

Stock Vs stock, yes, they are slower though... But not Horrible..
