old expensive video card vs new really cheap one

Post by horton »

my motherboard died, so im buying a new motherboard/cpu

if i go for celeron, it looks as if i can stick with my old video card (assuming it still works) i have a choice of radeon 8500 or a GF4 4600

if i go for AMD then I wont have an AGP slot on the boards im looking at so PCI express.

dirt cheap cards seem to be:
radeon 9250
gf 7300gs/le
radeon x550ge

bear in mind that i havent bought a new video card for years, so ive totally lost track of what is good and what blows.

i dont really wanna throw away/not use my gf4 cos it cost me loads of money (like years and years ago) but if a new cheap card is gonna be better, then fine.

i dont really game now, just something i can play with now and then would be nice.

cpu will cost a bit but you can use both agp/pciexpress. from what ive read, mind you over 6 months ago, there wasn't much of a performance hit with either interface.

edit: cpu

im willing to spend as little as possible.

the motherboards seem to be about $80, although if i want a celeron system, then its gonna be maybe half that.

about $35 for a celeron 2.2ghz, $45 for a 2.5ghz celeron,athlon 3500 $115, sempron 2800 $65

i was thinking about going as cheap as possible, cos i have 1gb of PC2700, and im assuming its not worth getting anything but the cheapest setup, if im using some old components.

Im not really bothered about this system being upgradable, I just want to have something at least as good as my athlon 2000, GF4600 system.

i havent seen anything thats gonna let me use AGP with an AMD, and I cant really be bothered to go to tokyo to look round the shops to find something like that, i just want this today, and be playing games tonight.

how much difference would there be between a celeron 2.5 and GF4600 system, and a Sempron 2800 and one of the budget PCI express cards I listed?

You can save your money by just beleiving that older expensive gfx card uses better semiconductors than the newer cheaper one whether it is true or false. :icon25:
