Jesus christ, the book is fiction but it claims to be non-fiction. Don't you see? He also claims in the book it's all true and many people after reading the book think it's true. Have you even read it?

From Dan Brown's webpage
HOW MUCH OF THIS NOVEL IS TRUE?
The Da Vinci Code is a novel and therefore a work of fiction. While the book's characters and their actions are obviously not real, the artwork, architecture, documents, and secret rituals depicted in this novel all exist (for example, Leonardo Da Vinci's paintings, the Gnostic Gospels, Hieros Gamos, etc.). These real elements are interpretted and debated by fictional characters. While it is my belief that some of the theories discussed by these characters may have merit, each individual reader must explore these characters' viewpoints and come to his or her own interpretations. My hope in writing this novel was that the story would serve as a catalyst and a springboard for people to discuss the important topics of faith, religion, and history.

BUT DOESN'T THE NOVEL'S "FACT" PAGE CLAIM THAT EVERY SINGLE WORD IN THIS NOVEL IS HISTORICAL FACT?
If you read the "FACT" page, you will see it clearly states that the documents, rituals, organization, artwork, and architecture in the novel all exist. The "FACT" page makes no statement whatsoever about any of the ancient theories discussed by fictional characters. Interpreting those ideas is left to the reader.
Of course the book reads as if it were true, just like Jurassic Park reads like we really could make a dinosaur theme park. Why would you read a book that said, "This is all bullshit, but I hope you find it to be gripping"?
Whether it is to believed is up to the reader, and anyone who takes a book from the fiction section and believes it to be true deserves to be mislead.

It's a mystery suspense novel, not a factual attempt to discredit Christianity.

That being said, a large part of the events, clues and artifacts in the book are actually real. Brown just took all those, and research that's been done on them, and ran with them himself and made his own story about the church and the grail.

It's compelling because it blurs the lines between what's real and what's supposition, but that's also the reason a lot of people can't just take it for what it is. A lot of Christians also don't like the idea of their great story being represented to the public in that way, the same way a lot of Moslims don't like their faith presented in a bad light. Just another controversy created by people who don't have anything better to do, imho.

inphlict wrote:I just finished watching "The Real Da Vinci Code" and it deals with the book written by Dan Brown. It basicly shows that this book and a bunch of others written about the holy grail are acctually false and are based on a hoax, also it shows how these books connected the dots incorrectly. What are your thoughts?

I think that the whole Jesus story is a myth, possibly based on a real person. And isn't their evidence that the stories from the second testament are acctually rewriten stories from the egyptians.
First thing I would do is find out the background of the book/movie you read.
I havent read this davinci code book yet...but as someone who reads alot..whenever a book that pops up that isnt a king or grisham...everyone who knows me all of a sudden wants to0 recommend me a book. I've gotten alot of mixed reviews of it...but in my research of the book. alot of its crit.'s...are comming from a strong chrinstian background.
ie: type in davinci code into google...the majority of the sites you find are christian agenda sites trying their hardest to debunk it.
Anything that says its roots are based in fact...which it seems the davici code novel seems to have put in its proluge...sets itself up for dissaster...and a best sellar spot. ;) \
(<b> hint: you want a best sellar listing, question god; and implicate him in a conspiracy.</b>)

im interested, but IM not going to buy this book until I get it at a garage sale for a dollar. The base of most of the hype of this book is about I learned in first year art history and theory.

iF THERE IS ONE BOOK THAT SHOULD BE UP FOR MASS DISCUSSION. ITS <b>"100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. </b>

It is one of the best books ever written in the history of mankind. If anyone ever wants to open a thread on it..I could talk forever about how beautiful and profound that book is on 100 differnet levels. In fact, I will say that your life is incomplete if you havent read it. That book is part of our zeitgeist. If you belive in the 100th monkey syndrome, it is your evolutionary duty to read that book so our species can evlove.

Jesus is like the Arthur legend, based on a normal man who was a politican or village elder. If Jesus didnt come first we would be talking about if Arthur really existed and all the shit he did.
Jesus had the PR men of the time (story tellers or scribes) go from town to town saying how brilliant he was or copying the existing stories going around and putting in his name.
Fuck if L Ron Hubbard said his shit 2000 years ago we would now if fucking trying to wash our thetans or auditing ourselves.

And you all forget that the bible has been edited twice in the 1940 years its supposedly been about, to the whims of the priests and fucking nutcases at the time. Extra stuff has been added that didnt fucking exist until the 8th century, mainly what hell was supposed to be like and how Satan looked like. Some more stuff was added in the 12th century but I forget what.
