was on my way to cardiff last night

for which i had to catch a train for

so sat in the train station me and my mate are having a chuckle then we see a group of like 10 guys walking up n down the platform (ages like 25 - 50)

didnt think nothing of it, but then some guy pulls out what i thought was a walkie talkie at the time and started shouting the carriage (coal hoppers) numbers in it, i thought o well he actually works here, then when he turned around i seen he was holding a dictaphone. then all the other guys pull out lil notebooks and start writing down numbers

at this time im just staring at them with a WTF look on my face

and you should see how fast the bastards move when a train is coming in on another track and they have to run over the walk over.

they had coffee's sarnies (like they were planning on spending the entire night there)

anyway my question is what was the point in writing down those numbers on the carriages ? i was quite skullfucked by the experience

It's the same as birdspotting I guess, you try to gather as many different speices as possible. In this case it's carriages instead of sparrows or tits.
