XP Install Question

Post by corpse »

I got a friend who has a corp copy of XP Pro and is getting the messages about an illegal copy etc.

Anyway, he is going to buy a legit version.

Right now he has 2 hard drives. XP Pro is on the C partition obviously and he has 2 other partitions on that drive. His other hard drive is not being used right now.

Question is this: He wants to save the C partition for the programs installed on it and the files saved and he is going to install the legit version of XP on his second hard drive.

If we unplug his first hard drive with C on it and set the second one as a master and do the install of legit XP on it, it will put the install of XP on the C drive. After this install is done, can we plug the first hard drive in to run as slave even though it has a C partition/drive on it?

Once he gets his stuff off of it, he is going to partition it and wipe out the corp copy.

Why not move his shit to another partition?
That way would be alot easier.

It's also easier keeping the My Documents, Desktop, My Pictures, My Music, Favorites folders on another partition other than C.

I know, I said it would be easier that way, but he wants to do it his way for some reason. The main thing is that he is going legit, I guess.

But will windows complain that there are 2 C drives or because 1 is a slave, does it matter?

There cannot be two C: drives, Windows will detect the secondary drive (once its connected after the install) as whatever the next available drive letter is.

Just hunt around at your local torrent store for a patch for the WGA tray thing. Then install the newly bought copy of XP (heh) when you actually need to format rather than because of that annoying pop up.

Also make sure to change the automatic updates so that you choose what to install rather than it automatically installing for you.

He had XP Pro and bought XP Home. As far as I know, you can't go down from Pro to Home.

ANyway, it has been formatted and the legal copy put on.
