guessing that the stats on death by lightning weren't compiled solely on a sampling of 1000 idiots standing on top of steel ladders. if they were, i'd also guess that the numbers would be noticeably different.
it's important to reiterate that i'm only guessing, i'm not professing to be an expert or anything.

If you're standing on a metal ladder in the middle of a lighting storm your chances of being hit are FAR better than 1 in a million.GreXican wrote:Yes I realize what he did was dangerous, but the chances of getting hit by lightning are 1 in a million, who would expect that to happen to themselves?
And No, I do not condone going on steel ladders in thunderstorms, but I just dont think the man is stupid for what he did.

Exactly. Especially when you're hanging onto a metal gutter, which is connected to a house with a lightning rod on it.Jackal wrote:If you're standing on a metal ladder in the middle of a lighting storm your chances of being hit are FAR better than 1 in a million.GreXican wrote:Yes I realize what he did was dangerous, but the chances of getting hit by lightning are 1 in a million, who would expect that to happen to themselves?

Yes, Spazda's parents are idiots unfortunately.
Fucking LOL, Nightshade.

What Jackal said. It doesn't take a whole lot to become the most electrostatically attractive thing around as far as lightning is concerned. Lightning is a verrrry strange beastie. It does pretty much what it wants, and its effects are rather hard to predict.GreXican wrote:Yes I realize what he did was dangerous, but the chances of getting hit by lightning are 1 in a million, who would expect that to happen to themselves?

Granted, but I just dont think his dad is stupid for what he did. His wife was going to do it instead of him, and knowing the danger he did it himself instead. I'm sure those of you in that position would rather have done it yourself than have your wife do it.
There's also the option to "not get on the ladder at all", but how many of you were successfully able to stop a stubborn woman? (without the use of a blunt instrument)

So? There was no reason not to clean the gutters AFTER the lightning was gone.
It's not like someone's life was in the balance, and in a heroic moment he decided to sacrifice his own well-being for his wife's.
Anyone who gets on a roof via metal ladder in a lightning storm - unless they have no other choice - is an idiot.

A little bit of chivalry does not a genius make.GreXican wrote:Granted, but I just dont think his dad is stupid for what he did. Moments like these make me grateful. Grateful that STD's only responsibility is bringing the pack mule loaded down with coffee beans safely back to the village.Jackal wrote:It's not really a debate. I can't blame him for what he did. First of all, the storm hadn't picked up very much and it seemed like it was still pretty far from our location, so 2 minutes on top of a ladder wouldn't seem so dangerous. Also, there was a lot of torrential downpour and it was beginning to seep under the sidings. That could've caused hundreds of dollars in damage if it had gotten a chance to seep under the roof. I don't think anyone here would have grounds to call my parents stupid based on one split-second act.
