My dad got hit by lightning

Post by Captain »

A few hours ago a whole system of severe thunderstorm cells started popping up in the Mississauga area. We got over 60mm of rain in less than an hour and it was still going on. My mother was really worried about the gutters in the front. I kept telling her that it doesn't matter if bucketfuls of water are leaking through the gutters now because there are no basement windows at the front of the house. She wanted to grab a ladder and clear the gutters but my father wouldn't let her. I mean come on, there's friggin' lightning and torrential rain out. So he decides to get up on a steel ladder with lightning right on our house. I was down in the basement for about 5 minutes when all of a sudden I heard the loudest smash/bang/boom/whatever sound you want to call it. The whole house just shook and the first thoughts that came to my mind were that he was either hit or fell off the ladder. I immediately raced out to see that my mother was bringing him in. He was hit by lightning. While he was on top of the ladder, the bolt hit our lightning rod and the electricity that separated from the initial shock traveled through all directions. One bolt hit my father but only managed to shock him a bit, only enough to leave him dazed and shaking. The only thing that saved him was the fact that he was wearing my rubber boots.

you really should be unplugging things from the outlets that you even remotely care about.

They won't make a difference.

(btw, glad he's ok. But seriously, who cleans the gutters in a thunderstorm?)

Then he was truly lucky to survive unharmed. As to the gutters, yeah I was thinking the same thing.

I went upstairs about half an hour ago and heard the loudest sound in my life, even louder than the time that propane tanks exploded near my apartment in Toronto :icon14:

I filmed some of the lightning, I'll edit the clip for profanity and upload it.

Unplugged my computer about 3 times :icon32:

I think it finally stopped now. If Puff is around, was it this bad in T.O.? I think Mississauga got the worst of it.

He was on a steel ladder, took a direct hit, but was dazed and shaking because he was wearing rubber boots...?

No burns?

No "holy shits", just me taunting the sky saying that my farts are louder than the bull I'm getting. Big boom into camera - NOW!

And it worked :icon32:

None whatsoever. Just dazed and complained about pain in his abdomen for a bit.

Yeah. I just figure if lightning can make it from the sky to your house, and from the lightning rod to you, then two cm of rubber isn't going to stop it. :icon26:

When I was 13, me and and a bunch of people were playing some baseball. Some kid I didn't know too well had a metal bat he was carrying around, we heard some thunder a couple of times and then all of a sudden we hear this loud explosion type sound very close to us and a quick flash. When we looked around we saw someone on the ground and only then realized that lighting had hit his bat. The kid was fine, the bat was a couple of feet away and didn't show any damage. I'm not sure what the hell happened but he had some minor burns on his hands and didn't want to get medical attention he did go to a doctor later. I have no idea to this day how it left so little damage.
