Looking for a new motherboard and CPU

Post by Captain »

Anyone else familiar with TigerDirect? There's one only a 15-minute drive from my house and I think it's one of only two TD stores in all of Canada :icon32:

Since my computer is still dead, I have no choice but to buy a mobo+CPU combo. I found this one which would suit my needs well:

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/ ... CatId=1599

It's a nice 775-Socket Mobo with a 3.06ghz OEM Intel P4 CPU. Anyone else have good experiences with ASUS? I've heard they're the best mobos out there.

My specs:

Intel Pentium 4 2.6ghz
Intel 865GBF ATX 478-Socket Motherboard
Retail Star 465W PS
1024MB (2x512) Kingston ValuRam DDR400 PC3200
Western Media 80GB HD
eVGA Nvidia GeForce 6600GT 128MB DDR3 AGP 8x
Creative SoundBlaster Live! 24-Bit with EAX HD

The motherboard and CPU would be quite a nice upgrade in the end. Might as well make the best of a shitty situation.

I can't help thinking you'd get a better deal on an AMD chip, especially since that bundle seems to require a heatsink/fan.

I dunno, mebbe the days of AMD being the cheaper option are becoming a thing of the past, but that still seems overpriced for a 3gig setup.

EDIT: Retail Athlon XP 3000+ listed online here for £65 WITH retail HSF...

i deal with Tigerdirect alot ( considering i am a little east of hamilton )

they are a good company to deal with.

also, Asus is one of the Top Tier motherboard makers so they rarly make a shit product.

Anyway, i would rather see you go with this combo though:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/ ... No=1834188

and then this:

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/ ... CatId=1577

yes, its a few bucks more, but that gets you a Dual core CPU and the same mobo.

and i point to the 805 for this reason:
http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/05/10/ ... ghz_cores/

i would normally agree, but if he is allready going to pony up $300 for that "bundle", i think my option is a little beter of a route... all in all he gets a Dual core and the new Intel Socket ( if he wants to upgrade it later )

Meh, to each its own.

actually, i have ONE upped my self...

check this out.

http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.ph ... cid=CPU.84

http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.ph ... cid=CPU.84

total: 250 + $10 online fee

damn, that is a temping setup..

and the only issue with that thread is if you are O/cing the Cpu there has been a "Vcore Drop" Noted.

MEaning, the Voltige to the Cpu drops off a little sometimes causing instability.
Bumping the Vcore up fixes it though.

( edit: Canada computers is on PAr with Tiger.. and sorry for spamming this thread :) )

Canada Computers has several stores Ontario, most in the GTA. I know there is one in downtown Toronto, (College & Spadina) and one in North York (Finch and Yonge).

I almost never shop at TigerDirect. Don't know why... their store is a bit far for me to travel to and I usually get same or better prices from other stores.

Favourite computer part shop... NCIX.com. Located in B.C. so you have to pay for shipping, but you don't pay the PST (which makes up for the shipping on larger purchases). They usually have shipping deals and they have excellent prices. Check them out for comparable products.

as was said, yes canada computers has a few locations...
as well as online :)

Also, i have delt with Ncix a few times now and i have to say that i did not enjoy the experance at all, they where lacking on the payment end ( credit card issues ) and when i had an issue with a product ( Recived faulty ) i had to pay shipping there and pack to get a replacement part and living in southen ontario it wasent cheap and took a little over 2 weeks and i was waiting on that part for my computer.

not to mention the 4 hours on the phone trying to get a RMA Number and etc.

that is why i stopped using ncix.

Bundles from tiger direct..

No way.. Every bundle ive ordered for myself, customers, or family, turned into bait and switch..

Once ordered a Asus package with a AMD chip.. Got the right amd chip, BUT the motherboard, some knockoff korean thing..

I called.. In broken english, they said "Thats the deal we sold you, To bad, no return without restock fee"

What they did, they took a few 100 orders, changed the website, used a vague discription for the item itself, and sent everyone bogus shit..

Ive gotten 1 order from them that was RIGHT....
[size=75][i]I once had a glass of milk.

It curdled, and then I couldn't drink it. So I mixed it with some water, and it was alright again.

I am now sick.

I hope so :(

Bait-and-switch is very true in TigerDirect. I bought an 80mm chassis fan from them a month ago. The website had advertised it for $3.99 but sold it for $10.99 at the store >:E

yo canada computers is two blocks from where i live. there's a strip of about 20 computer stores along college street. you should brave the big city and go from store to store looking for the best deal on the components you want. Although canada computers usually has the best price, they don't always... other good stores near c.c. are alpha plus computers, filtech, sonnam, inmax.

tell them the Mississauga Jew sent ya.

It's scary how many of you are talking about stores in Toronto... it's like I may have bumped into one of you guys on the street but didn't it was you.

I order a lot of stuff from NCIX but never had issues. So does my brother and cousin.

Inmax tried to rip me off once. Tried to pull a fast one on my processor by charging me more than advertised.

I might have to start investing in a new gaming rig. Probably start buying the parts seperately when I get some money.
Just not sure what I want exactly. Probably need a new gfx card also if I go with pci express.
I have a BFG geforce 6800 GT at the moment.
It's be nice to play BF2 on high settings.
