Anybody read Doonesbury online? If you flip through the archive, all of them for this week are devoted to Hunter S. Thompson.
The Duke character was based on him.

Its mostly miss IMO.
He tries to make it topical, like one of them going to Iraq and losing a leg, but he then spends 300 strips ramming in the point of it.
