Quake 4 lag?

Post by Ganemi »

Hmmmm...I'm running a Nvidia GF 7900 GT, with a gig of RAM, and a 3800+ DC processor. I can run the entire Q4 single player at 1280 x 1024 at 2x AA without any frame drops, but sometimes I lag so badly in multiplayer. What the hell is that?

Processor is bottleneck. Q4 is very CPU dependant. You would get same fps with lower standard gfx card and ram.

I'm not saying 3800+ is'nt a nice cpu.. it just Q4 performance is terrible.

Lag can mean a variery of different things, including but not limited to network latency, input lag, screen lag, and a whole host of things that get misinterpreted.

Saying there are others with 'lag issues' and claiming a common problem is the act of a fool. I'm sure there are common issues you and others are experiencing, but just because someone claims to experience 'lag' doesn't connect it in any way with your issues.

You say that sometimes you lag badly in MP. Does it follow then that sometimes its OK?

Different servers? Different time of the day? (cable internet saturated?)

Nah. I have everything off when I'm running it, and I have steady ping ingame. I notice the lag when everyone is spamming that freaking rocket launcher all over the place (man I hate Q4's rl). It may be the explosions and situations when there are many players out in the open area.

I noticed the lod commands under /r_ but I dunno how to use them, or if they even work, since I've got no one to test them with.

Wow all high and mighty....I bough to you....pfffff.

What I am pointing out to him is there is a issue with Q4.True it could be anything but I'm trying to give him a headsup on this problem.I think alot are experiencing it and just dont know what it is.

Before you go and start calling people fools mabey you should reevaluate your user name.

If you weren't claiming a common problem, then I didn't.

Also, why the hell do you think I picked this user name? Fool or no, you're very naive for thinking some play on my moniker is in any way original or unenvisaged.

Look the word up. You'll likely find a number of meanings you never knew about, too.

If you're getting framedrops in that case, check what happens when you fire the LG. I did get quite heavy framedrops with my Radeon 9800 Pro from dynamic lights from weapons so i turned it off. It's controlled by g_muzzleFlash (set it to 0).

I think I read that book. Isn't that the one where Barney gets his foot stuck in the drain?

Sorry Foo, I couldn't resist... It was just right there staring at me :p .

Of course, Foo has a point. When you have a situation with many variables, it's not very scientific to draw conclusions when you haven't done anything to isolate the variable you want to test. To see if the problem is in the game itself, you would need to neutralize other issues that could also be causing the lag you are seeing. Maybe someone could suggest a way to do this.

Gah. I had AA and AF on 16, but I found a way to reduce them for only Quake 4. Man. It was probably those damned rocket explosions getting AA'd putting too much stress on my card. : [
