By 'they', I'm referring to those people around the world who believe that a radical, intolerant interpretation of Islam, and the holy Quran, justifies them to murder and enslave everyone else on Earth who do not believe as they do. That they are called by God to conquer the world through violence and the indiscriminate killing of random people, even their own kind, and institute a single worldwide utopian empire based on their particularly cruel version of Islam.
You should tell him that, if you replace the word "Islam" with "Democracy," then a majority of the world right now would read that statement and think he is describing our government.
This asshole would clearly feel right at home blowing up a bunch of innocent people in the name of his beliefs.
If I didn't live in the bible belt myself, I would have a hard time believing people can be this self-righteous.
Tell me, does he have any idea you were in the Marines?
No, but I'm sure he falls into the same category, albeit with far less eloquent defense.
I'm pretty sure the guy knows I was in the Corps. I was just shocked at his 'reality of war' comment. Fuck, even I'M not arrogant enough to make a statement like that.
It really saddens me to see that he's sooooo fucking brainwashed. I could have been reading a Republican talking points memo. And they call Democrats 'Kool-Aid drinkers'...

He is a man who has done nothing challenging in his life. You need to take him hostage.
i am not saying that what he claims 'they' do is right, but he doesn't see where they are coming from to pass that kind of judgement.
If you're intent on responding to him, do so in a non-adversarial manner, otherwise the exchange will turn to shit almost immediately. By the tone of his last comment, he may be dead set in his tracks, but treating him as if he were critically examining the situation may benefit you both.

LOL it's not like we get to choose who to protect and who not to. i don't think the work 'protect' is fitting here to begin with though

Oh, this is far from the first heated debate we've had. It's easier to discuss things via email sometimes because he's got a bad habit of verbally stomping on my statements. It's not as though I'm venting my full frustration with his idiocy when we're talking. Hell, that's why I'm posting this here, so I'm less prone to pimp-slap him.

Man, you should have picked an experiment with a bigger chance of succes, this just seems doomed to fail...

Your background may hold more sway with him than most any argument you'll present, though it doesn't necessarily follow from this likelyhood that it's a good idea to appeal to your background. A nice tactic to use for getting people to open up is to end some of your emails with a light hearted unrelated comment, especially when you think the discussion might turn south.
ASCII emoticons might be a good idea used in moderation, following the text of the light hearted comment. Avoid them in the text of your argument.
