Chef serves up a heaping helping of hypocrisy

Post by Nightshade »

Isaac Hayes, in a huff, hangs up Chef's hat

Isaac Hayes says he can't take it anymore. The acknowledged Scientologist says he has watched the hit animated show "South Park," on which he voices the role of Chef, lampoon his religion one too many times.

So on Monday he quit the show.

"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," the 63-year-old soul singer said in a statement. "Religious beliefs are sacred to people and at all times should be respected and honored. As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices." Hayes has played the ladies' man/school cook character in the animated Comedy Central satire since 1997.

"South Park" co-creator Matt Stone told the Associated Press on Monday that he feels Hayes' concern for respecting religious beliefs is being rather narrowly applied. "This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology," said Stone. "He has no problem -- and he's cashed plenty of checks -- with our show making fun of Christians."

Last November, "South Park" spoofed the Church of Scientology and its celebrity followers, including actors Tom Cruise and John Travolta, in a top-rated episode called "Trapped in the Closet." In the episode, Stan, one of the show's four mischievous fourth graders, is hailed as a reluctant savior by Scientology leaders, while a cartoon Cruise locks himself in a closet and won't come out.

Stone told the AP he and co-creator Trey Parker "never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin."
Hmm, who knew? Apparently chef's a douchebag.

LOL, Hayes couldn't have made their point better. Maybe he'll kick himself later when he realizes it.

I'm sure it will be ripe with the hipocracy of Isaac's statements. I hope they really rip into him. :olo:

They better!!! I'm expecting them to pull out all the stops on this one.... However, they may not do it via Chef, as he is basically a "good" character. They may use another character to show the hypocrisy of Isaac Hayes. They'll have to kill off Chef, though, won't they?

I'd be more impressed with a storyline on how Chef got a different voice

He is right, South Park is completely shit. Maybe the first/second seasons were funny, original concept etc...

I didnt think about how easy it would be to get rid of the Chef character and replace it with some hip-jive woman or something. I'll look forward to seeing where they kill him off or do away with him somehow. :D

He may be whatever generic insults you threw at him I didn't bother wasting time on, but that doesn't make him wrong.

Yeah I'm generally a disgruntled person. That's what happens when you're a fucking genius surrounded by retards every day.

Note that I didn't knock anybody for liking the show. I just think it gets far too much credit for being "witty". I think it's about as witty as a frying pan to the crotch.
It was funny for about a season, then it just got old.

Whatever you think, it's constantly breaking new ground, and not just in the genre of animated series.

As a particularly crude example, but the only one I can think of offhand, I saw a commercial just yesterday that talked about killing hippies.

40 years of civil rights? Since when has the movie Shaft (or any of his other blaxploitation participation) been civil rights empowering?

And the episode has been in the can for 4 months and now he quits?

Been rewatching Southpark from the very beginning for the last week or two, and god damn it's still funny. Chef, you bastard.
