Quake 4 mp vs. Quake 3 mp.
I would say they're pretty much the same except Quake 4 has one new weapon (Nailgun) and some new maps. But is their a major difference between the two? And which do you prefer?
Now i've been playing it a while, and particularly alongside the new patch - it's starting to look a pretty solid q4 for me.
graphix pwn q3's (obviously) - I manage a steady 63 fps with shadows etc, so no probs there
sound is awesome comparatively - x-fi here, so no probs with the openal stuff
movement - whilst seemingly slower, and perhaps a bit floatier - the addition of crouch sliding just makes it for me, i miss the slide when I do play q3.
I think the biggest difference of all though, is the fact q4 is a developing scene. New mods (RA4 roxors) updates, fixes and general hubbub help to keep the community bouncing along. Its active.
Whilst q3 still sees plenty of pub play, and the various leagues are running more 'final seasons' I can't help but feel the q3 scene is ultimately going nowhere now q4 is here - theres certainly much less of a buzz about it (I know people still play qworld, and perhaps even q2 soemwhere or other - and so it will be with q3) and if truth be told the q3 scene was feeling rather flat even before q4 came, if anything the inital disaapoinment in q4 helped to fuel a revival.
disclaimer :- above text forms my thoughts, feelings and opinions only, they are no way based on fact, just observation and personal interpretation of what little i do see and hear.

Haven't been able to bring myself to play Q4 online more than like 5 times in total now. I enjoyed some of those games, but i really had to rub my eyes afterwards because of the strain it puts on them. Most of that is gone now with brightskins, but i play too much Q3 to get used to the different view height in Q4. Jumps in Q4 look shorter so many times i hold back too much because i think i'll overjump. One thing that really bugs me still is the jumping/falling and footstep sounds. It adds a lot to the feeling of carrying a 100 pound backpack that Q4 gives you (compared to Q3).
The prospect of MP Q4 that guys like Tim Willits gave us was that it would have all the good elements that made Q3 the best online MP game ever, but imho they have screwed too much with those elements, or couldn't replicate them well enough because of technical limitations. So far i consider Q4 gameplay a downgrade from Q3 so i don't play it. I'm keeping a close eye on all the good maps that are being developed though (i dl and try them out).
Basically i'm waiting till Q4 is in better shape (and till Q4MAX has a promode mode), so i'm not giving up on it.

I wish I had time to play it. Hopefully someday I won't be so busy that I will be able to get back into gaming.
I for one am tired of Quake 3. I mean it's a kick ass game and all, but when you play it for 4 years straight you kind of want a change and Quake 4 has done that for me.
I do agree that Q4 has some issues that need to be worked out and Q3 was the same way in the beginning, but when you get spoiled on playing a game like Quake 3 for so long with out any bugs it's hard to go back to a game that has problems.

All good posts, they sum up my thoughts as well. I loved Q3, was hard as hell quitting it cold turkey for a bit while I was giving my attention to Q4. I must admit, with some new custom maps and the latest beta patch, it's really starting to grow on me. To go from Q3 to another game is hard, nothing else seems to fit. Now that i've played nothing but Q4 for almost two months now, it's starting to feel like Q3 did to me in the early days....I am starting to feel the addiction all over again. With the next Q4max release hopefully it will bring even more satisfaction. I'm hooked. I think if everyone would give it a fair shot (a solid week of nothing but Q4) it would grow on them also. Just my thoughts.
When you gone.....you stay gone........or you be gone.

There are so many reasons why I should hate Q4 as it is so buggy and unfinished in comparison to Q3, but for some reason it just feels right. Hell, I have a crappy comp and I lurves the spammy spammy DM despite the fact that my fps drop to 11 at times.
I think I went through a lot of what people did when transitioning from Q3, i.e. "Q4 is slow, the hitboxes are too big, the sounds suck (and they do) bugs bugs bugs, rail is too easy, not enough maps, bad models yadda yadda". Despite all of that, once I totally ditched Q3 for a week for Q4, I was hooked. There is just something RIGHT about it.
I just hope they fix the problems, and from the looks of it, they are being addressed.

Hell, all this Q4 talk has made me want to experience all of the MP quakes. I JUST bought Q1 (again, I had it in '96 on mac) so I could see what QW is all about since it is the PERFECT fpsriddla wrote:I'm truly hoping they can somehow bastardize the best of each yet with Q4.

(anyone want to help me with links and such to get it working?)
After that is Q2 FFA as I just HAVE to try out the double jumps/box jumps. This is a key element in the Q4 1.1 patch, but I found it kinda annoying since I was used to 1.0.4, I guess I needed to adjust.
Q3 CPMA, my experiences were limited, but hitting someones feet with a rocket and flinging them 15 feet in the air to follow up with a rocket in the face was cool as hell. :0
