Here's some picture of monkeys I took at the San Diego zoo (70-300mm DO IS etc) ... it was late in the day so it was all shadowy.

lols.. nice file name on the first one

oh, and I found out that if you apply a high contrast USM to the DO pics, you get much better detail.. just do a USM in PS with 20%, 50 px and 0 threshold

And when you say you use the 70-300mm lens, are you talking about the DO one?
He's got the normal one.. i have the DO

Something about these pics makes me want to turn them into some grainy B&W things
42copy7sx.jpg[/img]
that takes away from the intricacy of the bird...
Maybe.. but it depends on if you're looking at the bird as just a bird, or if you're trying to imagine some meaning behind the bird

Parrot and Eagle look the best to me but all look good.

If you enjoy the pictures you take and have fun doing it that's all that matters

yeah... amazing what USM can do.

i sometimes do a two process USM. First a low percentage and high pixel (maybe a 20%, 50px like you did) pass, then a high percentage and low pixel pass (say 170%, 0.5px). The first pass acts like a contrast, and the second makes the edges crisp.

So my monkey pic turns into...

only problem is it brings out the noise.

That USM trick usually works a lot better than the normal contrast adjusting methods, but it can do some crazy shit to your pictures

These photo threads are very cool. on 56 ghey it does take a lot of patience to see them, but so far they have been worth it!

I really liked Dave's pics and these are good too.

I took a lot of zoo pics back in 80-82 with my AE-1 and they never came out as crisp as yours look. I know it could be done, but I couldn't get that quality. Also zoos have become, I think, more photo freindly than they were 25 years ago.

If I get a chance I'll post some pics I took at the Dallas zoo in 1980, during a typical hot crappy Texas summer.

Good work Dek! Post more.
Dave too! Make a deal with the Iowa drill team :)

Nice pics Dek!

why was it shit? I mean it's one thing to critique something and another to call it shit.
