I don't suggest taking anything to aid your sleep, you surely don't need a dependancy like that.

Do it the hard way, like it's being mentioned before, get a sleeping schedule and stick with it, exercise, get into the right diet etc.

I also have a lot of trouble getting to sleep. I have try very hard to make my brain calm down. Sometimes I'll be thinking about shit so much that I will go from being tired to completely awake. When this happens I usually don't get to bed until 3 or 4.
shadd_ wrote:hehe i just threw out the 7am to see what you would say. 8am is good. why anyone wants to sleep half the day away is beyond me.

8am wake-up with plenty of activity during the day wil def help getting to sleep at a half decent hour, which brings you around to the easy early am wake-up.

if you can keep it up eventually you'll wake up at the same time everyday alarm clock free.
Because more interesting stuff happens from 9pm to 1am than 7am-11am. And at our age you're usually going out on the weekends making it impossible to get yourself into a pattern.
because youre at "that" age you need to start paying attention and, ahem, grow up. that lifestyle is gonna be in a direct conflict with work, family and other fun stuff adults do.

don't wanna preach here but you have to decide between feeling like shit all the time or not.

I'm sometimes like that, I can go to bed pretty knackered but something will just pop into my head and i'll just be thinking about that for a few hours and won't be able to get to sleep =\. It's right though, when i've slept for something like 11 hours I always wake up really tired. What annoys me the most at night is when my mind is just active enough to keep me awake, but not active enough to watch some tv, play a game or anything like that =\

Sounds kind of weak but have you tried some of these sleeping aids? Nytol is one of them over here. I think my Dad tried some, but cant remember how effective it was.
Sleep aids dont help me at all. I've tried a few over-the-counter meds and they are so useless that one time I actually stayed up 3 hours after taking them.

I sleep all the time, I actually think I have a mild form of narcolepsy, especially when I'm not working and have nothing to occupy me. Over summer when I live with my parents I often spontaniously fall asleep on the sofa in the middle of the day after having an 11 hour sleep at night.

If I don't set my alarm I'll get up after midday after going to be at around midnight. Which is over 12 hours.

I don't really see it as a bad thing, it's far preferrable to not being able to sleep. It also means I can fall asleep on long journies with no problem whatsoever.

Not uncommon to sleep longer at different times of your life. Teens often need more sleep due to the growth they're doing. Physcial activity, keeping an eye on what you eat and keeping to a steady sleep routine is often enough to see you through that time.

If you still feel heavy fatigue, you should ask your parents (or if you're older, take yourself) to see a doctor for a routine check up. Tell the doc how you're feeling.

Anyone, male or female, young or old, can develop troubles with thyroid levels, etc. An easy blood test can sort that out.

gl with it.

You are sleeping too much. Read up on the circadian rhythm. And I don't see how people can sleep in so disgustingly late, regardless of when they go to bed. If I sleep past 9am, I feel like I've wasted part of my day...its always been that way for me - even when I stayed out drinking until 4 or 5 am. Of course, I wouldn't say that this was a healthy thing to do - 4 hours of sleep I mean. But my body just wakes up around that time.

If I were you, I'd start going to bed earlier, getting up earlier - and, depending on your age, strive for 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night (if you're a teen, probably closer to 9 - I think that's what the latest research has shown...).

Take small power-naps during the day if you are tired - don't go over 15-20 minutes or you'll enter that deeper sleep pattern that will leave you feeling groggy upon waking.

And, if you aren't already, EXERCISE. That is a huge factor in getting 'restful' sleep imho. And diet. Lower the amount of processed carbs and empty calories you are taking in - stick with healthy food only for awhile.

You can make an appointment with the doc and they might check the thyroid like wabbit said, but I'd go with the lifestyle changes first and see if they help.

They are advertising the hell out of sleeping meds right now, but I think that's a last resort sort of thing.

Agreed. If I sleep past 8 I feel like I'm wasting time. Normally I can't sleep more than 4 or 5 hours, I'll wake up and lay there staring at the ceiling if I try. Like this morning, I woke up at around 6 and couldn't sleep any longer. On the other hand I can go to sleep within 2 or 3 minutes. It's just the pattern my body has developed over the last 15 or 20 years.

I didn't say I was holier than thou. I just hate sleeping in that late - feels like the world is passing you by all day long.

Old school - early to bed, early to rise. Or late to bed, early to rise.

And for the record, I meant to take the "disgusting" part out of there, but forgot to.

DiscoDave wrote:So my typical sleeping pattern is something like to go bed at about 1am/2am and then wake up at 10/11 for lectures and stuff like that.
Count yourself lucky you have lectures at a civil time. Try getting to bed at 6:30 on a Tuesday morning after going out then getting up again at 8:00 in order to be ready for a 9:00 lecture.
