There is actualy a big OS war reving up isnt there. I mean obviously apple and MS are opposed to each other and each wants more and more market share, but it just didnt hit me till right now that the result of apple moving to intel is. It puts the 2 OS's on a equal playing field, it puts them on a path to truly go head to head. I dont see the new drive from apple subsiding and they definetly got momentum. Hell im even getting caught up, if i wasnt saving to start a business i would have gone and sold my brand new laptop and got a intel mac or would have atleast bought a imac, Not to mention im messing around trying to install the OS in atlast a dual boot enviroment. The company has really won me over and im cheering them on.

Anyway, i just thought that was interesting and i never heard anyone talk about it before. I think its going to be fun to watch. Especialy for me if apple stock takes off again.

i am totally not upto date on the latest info, will you be able to use all win apps on mac intel machines? If not that's still one of the biggest limiting factors.

It's not going to win over with gamers, since MS has directx tied over with windows. Porting opengl games is one thing, but getting directx games working on mac probably won't happen.

Well there is rosetta which allows office to run, but the wine team from linux is being brought into the folds of apple if i rememeber right and i remember reading very positive things about how well it was running.

So no, not out of the box, but when your running a system that has a foundation of *nix anything i possible. The core is Open Source friendly. Infact i just remember a rticle i read last night about them having a linux version of VMware running winXP in the new OSX. According to the article it was running at nearly native speeds.

Makes me wonder if dual boot is not the way of the future, but just opening up a OS like a program.

I dont know about you guys, but a OS with this kinda potenial is very exciting to me.

I cant pull together the logic to support that. Too much effort has been put into it, too much life has been pumped into it for it to just drop out. Its on a upward trend, i have seen many new imacs at work and they arent slouches, they do indeed run very fast.

I dunno, i just dont see it happening. Would be a shame too, im just starting to digg them.

I'm not following on this... Would Apple be trying to make their profit solely off their hardware? Because that sounds like a losing proposition without their OS.

The biggest reason people buy Macs is because they like the 'appliance-like' feel of the OS over the headaches Windows causes.

The piece I was listening to said that they would drop the mac OS and instead concentrate solely on apps. I'm hazy on some of the details but it was in a recent podcast of This Week in Tech, John Dvorak made the prediction and he's right very very often (although he is a bit of a cunt).

I can not even beleive that someone would consider a Mac OS.
Most peoples next step is moving oway from this "OS".

It lacks everything Windows has. And with Vista and dual core right on the horizon (circa: Nov 2006) even graphic editors (Photoshop people) have no more reason to use Mac OS.

A Mac is a -village pearson that never saw a computer- friendly.

If you want an actual OS that is powerfull and truely open source, get Linux.

A MAC is a a breath of fresh air. Well, for me it was anyway.

My brother got one last christmas and the way they organise and provide an interface for all the multimedia files is excellent, just one thing of probably many thats better with windows.

I'm actually getting rather tired of windows, I can't really afford to go straight to MAC, but im even considering linux as I game less and less nowadays.

There are many lunux distributions that come wit programs that will actualy let you play most of the PC games.

And The incoming Windows Vista is goeing to be very mutch refreshing and user friendly, with a bucket load of special effects.

That mindset is so limiting its almost pathetic. The MacOS is a great OS that works quite well. It offers much in comparison to windows, and is improving at a much faster rate than windows as well. Granted there are fewer programs available for the Mac, but the number of them out there is growing big-time. Basically, both computing environments have their benefits and drawbacks, and its really a matter of preference at this point. I love the Mac OS, and find it a lot more appealing than Windows. I'll stick with it as long as it's around, and it looks like its going to be around for quite some time.

Effects are going to become uniform across the board. Apple has the head start, so only expect improvements and additions in upcoming OS X releases that will top out Vista's effects. Its a neverending battle for aesthetics and user-friendliness.

With the transition to intel, PC emulator apps like VirtualPC, Q, and others will run just like WINE in Linux. OS X on intel is a *NIX operating system running on an x86 core, just like linux on any generic PC. Heck, with the proper hacks to windows, one can boot windows natively on the intel macs. The environment is there to run Windows and windows-based apps on the new macs, and with developer support from apple, I expect to see more apps transition to OS X from Windows as opposed to folks giving up on OS X. Apple just made it easier for developers, and consumers wont know the difference. That's vital for apple's business plan, and very healthy for the company.

Despite apple's ventures into consumer electronics and other software, the MacOS is the basis for the company. The company is expanding, creating iPod divisions, etc., but is still very much based off its computer lines. If they were to drop the MacOS, they'd becoem just another WinTel clone, and would be in the same market as Dell and HP. With those competitors, apple wouldnt have much of a chance. They'd be just a shiny computer case with the same offerings as any other computer company.

I think Dvorak is pretty much wrong in this prediciton.

Well the biggest obstacle I see is that Macs are so much more expensive than any other pre-packaged systems. Without an OS, I just don't see how they could possibly compete on that level.

Lets see you play Doom 3 on maximum settings on a mac.

I all ways walk by and sometime try out macs at my local Future Shop store and they are completly counterintuitive for me. I could allso never get used to the idea of a one button mouse?!

Once again you're not looking at things properly. The Doom programmers claimed going from intel to PPC was a burden for that game, and they've just released a universal binary for the game this past week that runs on intel. Even so, I play D3 fine on my PPC mac, and yes, it does run playably with the maximum settings on.

The counterintuitiveness is, logically, from your experience with windows. You're expecting the thing to behave and essentially be windows with a different look, but thats not the case. Go try it with an open mind, and figure out how it works instead of being disappointed when it doesnt function exactly like windows, or what you'd expect from windows.

The one-button mouse is over. Apple has the mighty-mouse, which has ~5 buttons on it, and is bundled with every new mac. Additionally you can use any mouse you wish on a mac. I'm currently using an MX700, with all the buttons working and customized to my liking.
