I saw a special on Discovery HD very recently about the collegiate solar car race. What year(s) were you involved again? The special aired recently, but was a couple of years old.

Hmm....I don't remember that post and then I just happened to notice this URL in my history. Crazy shit.

- With regard to Michigan's solar car program, my responsibilities ended more or less a year ago. At a certain point after we are done testing the vehicle, the race crew takes over management of the car. I couldn't be in the race crew since I was graduating and had already gotten a job lined up. They did, however, go on to win the national championship and came 3rd in the world.

- My senior project was a consulting project with the University of Michigan Hospital to improve their room utilization in their internal medicine department.

- I got a job as a consultant with Cerner Corporation, which is an IT company in the healthcare industry. All the technical shit is a cakewalk and the consulting is fun.

- Unfortunately, the job required me to move to Kansas City, Missouri IN THE MIDDLE OF FUCKING AMERICA WITH ALL THE REDNECKS HELP ME GOD. I'm hoping to get out of this shithole as soon as possible. On the plus side, I work with a lot of cool people who like to party, my apartment is within a 3 block walk of two dozen bars and the cost of living is really low here.

- I'm still with the same girlfriend I've been with for 5.5 years (she moved with me to KC) and we're probably on track to get married. Definitely getting a house next time we move.

Anyways, I thought this place died. Is it still under IGN's control?

I hate Cerner.. They "donated" a bunch of crappy old Dell laptops to us and we had to throw 5 of them away.

Right now, not really. I'm doing random shit for different people until I get assigned a client. "Random shit" consisting of testing or some database management, and I'm also getting more corporate certifications while I'm riding the bench, so to speak. Yeah, it's fucking boring. On the plus side, I get to work from home since all I need to work is my company laptop and a phone. Today, for example, I rolled out of bed at 9 AM just in time to get on a conference call which I put on speaker phone and muted it as I watched Bad Santa and read these forums while listening to the call.

When I do get a client assigned to me, I will be travelling to the client site Monday-Thursday for at least 12 months. The projects that I am involved in are rather complex and, as a result, take a long time to complete. An example would be something like implementing a brand new IT infrastructure that impacts delivery of patient care at 6 hospitals in a health system.

Do you find it irritating that you're not doing EE work? At least, it sounds as if you're not. I'm finishing my undergrad this December, then straight in to grad school. Angling for a job with NASA or one of their contractors atm...

As I progressed in my degree, I found myself moving away from the more technical aspects of engineering. The appeal of helping people and companies resolve inefficiencies was greater than the appeal of technical work. That is why I changed from EE to Industrial and Operations Engineering, which is like a business degree for engineers. I also feel significantly less "one-dimensional" in my career opportunities.

Ah, I see. I'm a bit scared of the specialization, but I'm doing a fair bit of Ops Engineering right now and it's fucking boring. It's Process Engineering, actually but it sucks large, sweaty balls.
