So, somebody wanna fill me in on Vista?

Post by o'dium »

Brand new OS. Fancy shit. Yadda yadda.

Whats the bottom line? I'm on XP Pro ATM, what are the pros and cons?

First of all, what are the specs needed to run this thing? ATM i'm on a 64bit 3200 Athlon, 2 gig ddr ram and a geforce 6 6800 256meg ultra AGP. Any good? Ill be upgrading both the CPU and GPU pretty soon to at least 4+gig and a 7800 PCI.

Right, lastly, can somebody fill me in on this whole "DX Vs OGL" thing? I heard a while back that Vista supports DS better than OGL, meaning that OGL games will run slower or some shit...

Any info would be hawt, as I cant be arsed to type Vista in google, but i could be arsed to type this thread :p

Microsoft Operating System X
http://crystalxp.zerackiel.net/_resources/vista1b.jpg

On a serious note thou, this OS will actualy take in to account PC gamers, as people that actualy reallyactualy do matter to operating systems. Instead of trating us like minesweper office geeks. It will feature a new Direct X 10, and a system that willmonitor your PC specs and the game you are installing, then set optimum game setting, so it runs on your PC, really smooth.
It will also feature a My Games folder, where you will acces all of your games. Each game will have a "screen" or a "page" with box cover art, small description, ESRB rating, last timeplayed and etc...
In this folder you will also find all game related PC'ing tasks relating to games, like hardware setting, ad/remove programs.

It will also feature perental controls. (cant wait to see howmany seconds it takes for someone to create a hack for this... :D) The feature will alow parents to monitor and restrict their child's activities, and get a report.

Plus the whole interface will be 3D acelerated, what ever that means.

Comming out somewhere around November 2006

P.S. Please feel free to ignore my spelling, thank you.

It makes games run better because when playing it strips down all the unnecessary processes.

Games are supposed to run faster. The entire desktop/ui will take advantage of dx10 acceleration. When you boot up games, it will free up resources and shut down services/processes. Least from what I've heard.

I'm not sure about the ogl thing, but it's possible that ms hasn't provided the necessary tools to update ogl to the next level that it needs to be. I think it has something to do that when dx is the main api running in the whole ui/etc. it will have priority.

That's not to say that every game from now on will be coded in dx, but more and more are going that way. But if there is demand (games shipping with ogl) Nvidia/Ati can probably improve their own ogl driver as needed.

Im very sceptical about saying that windows Vista will make games run faster, considering all the extra crap they're putting into it.

I should be able to get it free through my uni though. WOOT

It's good to see that the classic theme is still in there strong as ever. That will enable at least a lot more people initially to use the os as it won't be as heavy on resources as the glass theme.

I will update to Vista as soon as I:
1. Get a PC that will run it.
2. Find *beep* and *beep* on *beep*

It's almost feature complete innit? The ship date could be q3 2006, would be similar when xp shipped in 2001. They did have to strip some features like winfs to get it "complete" though... there might be some addons coming in a service pack.

Well, the glass like theme of Vista was originaly in XP, until they took it out due to time or something.

I'm waiting on the price. If its to expensive they can fuck off :(

Holly fuck, I just found out that you will be able to rotate the windows, in 3D!

Here is an exilent look at the Vista from a gamers point of view:

Since they took out WinFS there's no reason for me to touch it until they get the initial bugs worked out.

I'll wait to see the benchmarks on games. I hope it's not too bloated.

I think the general census is when Vista comes out, its time to go dual core.
