Google's OS - maybe

Post by +JuggerNaut+ »

from the register.co.uk
Google is preparing its own distribution of Linux for the desktop, in a possible bid to take on Microsoft in its core business - desktop software.

A version of the increasingly popular Ubuntu desktop Linux distribution, based on Debian and the Gnome desktop, it is known internally as 'Goobuntu'.

Google has confirmed it is working on a desktop linux project called Goobuntu, but declined to supply further details, including what the project is for.
not sure i trust the register for much of anything. anyone else have any inflammation regarding this? i figured this was a no-brainer that they'd go this route, but would like to read more proof.

Eh, I can see a bunch of geeks installing and using this, and everyone else will stick with windows, this won't be overtaking it. :p

Goobuntu eh? I find that very interesting. Ubuntu has been gaining recognition as a distro dedicatedto building a community and raising linux to the next level in the world of desktop computing. Now google is essentialy joining the movement.

Very interesting. I hope its true.

It's probably just to fuck a little with the guys at Microsoft. I doubt that they are very serious about it.

um. i'm pretty sure that google knows it won't be "overtaking" windows, but any competition is good competition, right?

i do think google will be almost head to head with MS when more live apps show up.

4) Enough about Apple. Google will continue to roll out new products and services as it builds out its infrastructure for a huge push in 2007. They'll need money, of course, so I predict a supplemental stock offering timed with a 20-to-1 stock split. 2006 is a building year for Google.

13) Google WON'T go head-to-head with Microsoft for a desktop operating system or a cheap PC.

If Google can beat Microsoft to market with live, web-based applications, and they can tie them into their free operating system, I wouldn't be surprised if even some normal everyday users wanted to switch - especially if they can run the OS on just half the computer that Windows requires.

It's an interesting situation, I can't wait to see where Google goes with this.

Microsoft still sucks at security and users suffer for it. My best guess is they are planning on putting all this new technology in the "next" operating system, which seems to be yet another year behind schedule. The important question the world will soon be asking -- "Do we need another Windows operating system?" In 2006, Windows XP gets another service pack and/or facelift. Nothing more.
so true.

A post on the Register, claiming that Google might be close to rolling out a "Goobuntu" Linux desktop distro, has been making the usual rounds in the tech news circuit today. Despite today being earnings release day, presumably a very busy time at the Google press relations office, technology spokeswoman Sonya Borälv responded very quickly to my query on the topic. She said that "[w]e use Ubuntu internally but have no plans to distribute it outside of the company."
to bad, im using ubuntu already.

I would completely convert over to Linux if they ported most games to it. However, that rarely ever happens, and the emulators that attempt to run Windows games are really not good at all.
