I wouldn't say that teachers have to be hardasses to be effective.

Two of the best teachers I've had were pretty easygoing in that sense. They weren't dismissive of anyone didn't have that ivory tower syndrome, so they were respected even by the problem students. Plus they had tons of interesting tidbits and examples to bring, so even problem students generally payed a bit of attention in their classes.

This is not to say that I learned the most out of their classes, because they helped everyone it stole time away from the better students, who could pick up the basic level on the fly. But on average I guess they worked better than their strict counterparts.

I never said that either. There are things I am a hardass about - one thing - respect. I'm not going to go nuts if someone is 10 seconds late once or their cell phone rings once in class. That might happen now and then, and its silly to go ballistic over little stuff.

The atmosphere of my class is actually very laid back, AFTER we've established the ground rules. Too many teachers want to be the kids friends first and teachers second. That doesn't work. You're not there to be a friend, per se...you are there to be a friendly mentor or authority figure. Too often kids favorite teachers are simply the ones who let them get away with about anything - the ones who the kids view almost as they do their other friends...With at-risk kids who never have to answer to anyone at home you can damn well bet I am going to be a bit of a hardass at times - for their own good. Always fair, but never dismissive of inappropriate behavior and never letting them give up on themselves with excuses and laziness.

Its a constant balancing act, and one that you get good at only through experience.

Yes tnf, there's a lot of respect for what you do. Keep up the good work, most of us have stories of teachers that reached them at one point or another.

On a side note, FFS KRACUS, SHUT THE FUCK UP.

Kracus wrote:Meh I hated teachers who had nothign better to do than be idiots just to be an idiot. I'm not commenting on anyone here either but I had this teacher in highschool that was a real hardass, he absolutely loved giving me a hard time for what reason I can't fathom I was his top student. But either way he'd always be punishing me or trying to deduct marks from my tests because of little bullshit things he could find but I ultimately spoke to the principal and had the marks put back on and passed that class witha 99% grade but thanks to that math teacher I was inelligble for an advanced math class because he wouldn't sign for me. He instead wanted me to take anotehr math class before taking the advanced math class which I think was total bullshit.

There were two classes you could take one was like math regular and the other was math for retards. Somehow I got stuck in the math for retards class but they're the same class, the regular class just has a couple extra things in the course the other one didn't. I don't know if they still do it that way but the reason for the two classes were for those with difficulty and those who didn't but the regular course was worth more in term of credits. Anyway, about 2 weeks into the math for retards class I realized I didn't belong there since I was litteraly scoring perfect on everything without even trying, that's what got my teacher I think, the fact I didnt' have to study to get these scores so he was on my case the whole semester and wouldn't let me switch, idiot.
that math teacher thing sounds familiar
i already had the "watch out for him" reputation in highschool - which i didnt care much about - so every teacher was really biased towards me. anyways i was always working ahead in math class cause unlike the five giggly girlies i didnt need everything explained to me eight times over. the teacher tried to use this against me by asking me to solve an equasion while i was busy doing the assignments 3 chapters aheaad - trying to break my concentration n all and secretly hoping i got it wrong. it never worked, so when the year was over and i went a class up, he told my new math teacher that i needed extra attention :dork:
after i proved i already knew all that crap, and even the shit i had to learn that year, i asked if i could be excluded from the class and/or given a more advanced text book. she said this would only be possible if last years teacher would vouch for my skills. which he obviously didnt cause he just couldnt handle the fact that i corrected him more than once the year before

dick
crap like that happened all the time to me all through highschool. fucking teacher cliqueing together >:E

The coolest teacher I had was my calculus 1 teacher. His classes were a hoot, there were no limits on coarse language. In the beginning of the class he would pace back and forth for a minute or two and then say "ok, today we have a quiz... nah I'm just fuckin' with you!" He told us that he was expelled from high school for making a bomb.

I would really rather watch this pentrix thing over the curling in the Olympics.
