best external hard drive?

I've been considering getting the 250GB Lacie due to its GB/$ ratio and small size (http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10384 ), but reviews seem to be rather mixed, with a few horror stories here and there. Any other recommendations?

you could always buy the external case and harddrive separately.

Aren't LaCie's highly overpriced?

Unless you need the one-touch feature, I'd buy an enclosure. Much cheaper.

Well it really depends on what he needs it for.
If it's to bring to and from the office, then I'd go with a 2.5" enclosure and a laptop hard drive.
If it's because he dosen't have enough room in his case, then I'd get a bigger case.

If it's because he wants to grab it in the event that his house will burn down, then that's ok.
But if he's having it for that reason, and has data on it that is irreplaceable, then I'd look for on-line data storage.
My brother-in-law does this and it costs him $10 a month for like 5 gigs of storage. Basically his last 20ish years are on his hard drive.
He owns his own business and works from home, so all his data is on his computer.
He does have it raided, but if the place catches on fire, he'll also have a backup online.

Anyhow here's a couple pics of a 2.5" enclosure next to a 4¼" hard drive for comparison.

2 benefits of laptop drives:

1. powered solely by USB, no power brick/cord to worry about
2. more portable, smaller form factor

Laptop drives are very nice in some situations.

The enclosure I posted requires 2 USB ports,
or 1 USB port and an external power supply.
