You can restrict access to individual files and you can run as a user with less permissions then admin, just make a new account and select the options you want.File-level security has alot to do with a shit-ton of current malware exploits. I can't believe you'd be so thick-headed as to argue that an OS (home) which allows all users to run as Admin without the ability to restrict user-level access to individual files/directories is somehow immune to such exploits over the internet - which again IS A NETWORK.
Windows XP Media Center Edition vs. Home
Fine you want to ignore that, I don't care. But this quote is simply not true.

If you have home, fire it up and try to set user permissions on a file. Guess what, you cant because it isnt there.
p.s. the internet is a great big ol network.
I'm done with this because I have better shit to do.
But to answer your last question, regular users don't acctually need to restrict access. When they make their account they simply restrict access from there not on individual file basis, you are wrong about HOME being shit, it's enough for regular users and has little to offer in protection unless you are on a network and want to restrict access to users already on the network.

I skipped all the BS in the middle of this thread, so if anyone already said this sorry...
MCE is XP Home with the the media center added. You can take the MCE tour on Microsoft if you want to check out all the features it has to offer. As a daily O/S it is XP Home, you will be missing out on some of the XP Pro features, but it shoud suit you just fine. MCE is one of the best things I ever played with, now I never miss a show on TV

It's only $30 more and I was going to get it as long as it wasn't a step DOWN from Home in any way. Since it isn't, I'm getting it with the system I'm buying.BlueGene wrote:Transient, what did you end up doing or considering doing?
In fact, there's a deal at Dell that if you spend over $599 on a computer system, shipping is reduced from $99 to $25, and the System I was going to get was exactly $599 before shipping the way I had it configured. Adding the OS put it over that amount and ended up saving me money, LOL.
I wish you had posted back on page 1 before all the drama cropped up, heh.Giraffe }{unter wrote:Transient wrote:Thanks. From what I gather, MCE is a step up.

I have a Haupaugge PVR 150 in my current PC that will be moved to my new one. The cable goes into a splitter, one end going into the cable box and the other into my VCR (which after a spiderweb of additional cables allows me to watch TV on my PC or my TV). Should I be able to use my TV Tuner card's remote to switch channels independently, or am I forced to watch what I see on my TV?
I also have an S-Video cable that will allow me to watch TV on my cmoputer, but I don't get audio that way and don't know how to, if that matters any.
