Yeah, my grandparents called me today expressing how excited they were with the outcome of the elections. Supposedly, the old pro-Pinochet crowd is hating the decision. Hopefully, this is a step towards a better world. From the look of it, all signs point to a positive progression in Chile.
Ironically, only 30 some odd years ago, Chile was under a dictatorship. I always figured Canada would be the first to do something of the sort.
A pediatrician turned politician, Michelle Bachelet is an atheist single mother with three children by two different partners - which makes her an odd choice in a macho and profoundly Catholic country.

sadly, the people would likely vote for a woman. the way it's set up though, very hard for a woman to get the leadership of a major party.
there may be a chance for that in say 5 years from now. one rich powerful woman is in a good position to perhaps take the liberal party leadership if they lose the jan. election

yeah that's pretty major, especially in a historically conservative patriarchal society.
