Saw "Jarhead"

Good movie, focuses on the people, not action or combat. Still entertaining. Discuss?

nothing that hasn't been done before, unfortunately

it didn't teach me anything I didn't get from other war movies before it, nothing worth sparking new thaught provoking discussion.

SOS just different setting

It's based off of a book written by a marine, so it's a little different

the trailer made me suspect otherwise actually

but it cant be good, see theres a golden rule in the movie-industry, and thats: the longer the trailer, the worse the movie is.
this trailer was quite if not too long

It's a mix of three kings and full metal jacket. Yeah it does try and focus on da people a lot but it still is a yanks save the day with a bunch of sterotypical soldiers etc. :o

BORING

The message of this movie is: Hey, war is pretty boring 95% of the time.

To properly convey this message, they made 95% of the movie extremely boring.

i don't think there's enough mainstream knowledge of the persian gulf conflict/war/weekend for it to have the impact of say any vietnam film.

or it was just a shitty movie...

Not at all. It focuses on the psychological conflict people go through while at war.

I recommend it, and jake gyllenhaal is an awesome actor.

True, this movie went more for the "Full Metal Jacket" point of view (war sucks) more so than a "Platoon" point of view(war is hell).

yeah that's pretty much how i felt. i couldn't tell if it wasn't philosophical enough for a non-marine to empathise with or if there was just something lacking altogether.

the apocalypse now scene i thought was totally ironic and maybe wherein the point of the movie lies, which is what i said before about how our reasons for being in the middle east were not as easily visible to the public like fighting communism or nazis in previous battles, though that is what washington would have like us to believe. even the men fighting the gulf war were not briefed as to why they were there and felt no connection to anything other than their unit and guns; ie the marine corp's mantra since the beginning but so blurred by freedom in peacetime and the subversive use of military action in the last 30+ years.

or not lol

true....i could relate to this movie, and nothing slipped by when i watched it. Most times when i was laughing all over the place, people around me had a confused look on their face wondering what was going on.

i guess you just gotta live it to fully get it

does it have any of the following lines of dialogue in it:

1. "we're going in hot!"
2. "lock 'n' load!"
3. "game time!"
4. "let's roll!"

?

I found the movie to be refreshing.

Military has a tendency to reshape identify. It changes people on a sociological level. If you spent a hole career training on a skill; and that skill is never used how dose that effect some one?

What about how the war was fought? Was it a satisfactory way to fight? If so, how has war changed? Will his job slowly disappear? Would it have ben more efficient to use sniping over bombing? Would the loss of life been less or more?

What about his best friend; would it have been better if he had died while on tour? His family would have received financial support. Would they have been better able to understand his death.

What about choosing to kill some one; and following through. How dose that effect some one? Will he be able to successfully re-entergrate him self into public society?
