Firefox to get BitTorrent integration

Post by Eraser »

AllPeers is a simple, persistent buddy list in the browser. Initially, interaction with those buddies will be limited to discovering and sharing files - If you choose to, you can share any file on your network with one or more of your friends. They will be able to see what files you choose to share (even getting an RSS feed of new files you include), and with a single click download it to their own hard drive.

AllPeers will work even when the sharer is offline - AllPeers is a bittorent client, and will allow files to be pulled from multiple sources. When downloading, the file may be grabbed partially or fully from others you have shared it with (or who shared it with you).

When the RIAA gets hold of this, all I can say is "know your buddies well".

Well it's an extension so if you don't want to use it, you can simply remove it. BitTorrent is not nescessarily a resource demanding system either. However, it has the potential of seriously choking a network connection when not configured properly.

It's just an extension, it won't ship with the browser, hence it's not a "killer-app", since only nerds ever download extensions.

As I've understood it, this plugin aims to make sharing small files between friends and family easier, not to implement a full-scale, heavy-duty bittorrent client. What would be the point? A plugin could never hope to compete with the likes of Azureus or utorrent[1].

[1] "mutorrent", if you want to be a Greek grammar nazi.
