Yea, so that pretty much invalidates your argument about the console being able to put performance as good or better than a $1200 PC. No HDTV - no real competition in graphics.primaltheory wrote:I play quake 4 on the same 60 inch sony grand wega that i play my 360 onGrudge wrote:Console fanboys keep forgetting that they also need a $1000 HDTV in addition to their $400 console to be able to compete with an "expensive" PC when it comes to image quality.
I think its funny that they can't stop advertising squad based combat as something amazing and new... "FIGHT ALONGSIDE YOUR AI-BASED SQUADMATES!! WATCH THEM TAKE FORMATIONS, PEEK AROUND CORNERS, THROW GRENADES, SHOOT THE ENEMY, AND RUN INTO DOORS AND STAND AROUND WHILE A GRENADE SITS A FOOT AWAY FROM THEM!!! GROUNDBREAKING!"eepberries wrote:I really hate single player games where you're forced to fight with team-mates. That's one of my major grips with Quake 4, though there are many others. Yea, I spent more time on teh original nintendo than on any system since then.MKJ wrote:and as we all know, graphics are what makes a platform superiour !
I'll admit that I am a technophile - I like to have the latest technology just for the sake of having it. I also will buy every console - because I am not a 'fan' of any one in particular. If I am a fanboy, its a fanboy of good games...and there will be good games for every console...

exactly the same with me. i do have all the fancy stuff and all - whats the point of having a rig that can output 5.1 sound when you dont have a receiver?
but like what happened the other day - the missus wanted to see a movie that i didnt want to see so i played GTA:SA on the smallscreen in the bedroom. and i had just as much fun as i normally would have

Yea, its kind of a paradox...the sharper the resolution, the more apparent jaggies and other imperfections are...plained wrote:the low res of tv and the way its displayed hides flaws alot better than on a comp.
jus sayin
but if the graphics are really sharp themselves and hi-resolution, you miss out on some of the details without the hi-resolution display...

I remember there was one game that was an alternate history where WW1 never stopped, but that's the closest I can think of. Historical settings besides WW2 just don't work as well in an FPS game. WW2 is the most global conflict with clear "good guys" and "bad guys" that both had a broad and interesting arsenal that was fairly balanced between the two sides. Before WW2, the weapons just aren't interesting. After WW2, the conflicts aren't interesting and/or the environments aren't fun.
I doubt there will ever be a good historical FPS game that isn't set in WW2, at least not in the near future. However, people seem to be growing tired of the WW2 games, so I expect even those will start to disappear as well.

Actually it seems Quake 2 was intended to have squad based portions throughout it (e.g. during the prison levels, etc). There are remnants of such code within the source, and I remember there was a mod that came out years ago which enabled it to some degree. :icon26:eepberries wrote:I really hate single player games where you're forced to fight with team-mates. Well even if it was supposed to have that, it didn't, and I'm glad it didn't.HateFactor wrote:Actually it seems Quake 2 was intended to have squad based portions throughout it (e.g. during the prison levels, etc).
