Someone give me the straight skinny on Q4Max
Sounds like it's worth installing for the fps gains. What's the latest version, what do I need to do, etc.
Yes, I'm lazy.

ive seen versions .5, .6, and .7 running on different servers so good luck connecting. .7, the cpl winter release isnt supported so you probably wont be joining any of those servers (simply cause there's only like 2 in NA)
also, you'll need these maps or you wont be able to connect:
pro-bliptourney
phrantic (final)
galang (not remix, lukins map)
tmp mappack 2
and in some instances tmp mappack 1, drach fps mappack and drach's ctf fps mappack.
all these can be found here :

Yeah in NA all you really need is .5, I havent had any problems getting on a q4max server with it.
Then, once again in NA, you will need the CPL maps for sure, and probably the TMP as prince1000 said. This post has all the in use maps at the moment. http://esreality.com/?a=post&id=944727
All it does in the current .5 state is add brightskins, the next version however will be sweet if .7 is any indication with 'vertex' light and a smoothness that nearly reaches Q3 levels even on dated hardware such as my own.

There are people out there that are using .7 to run servers, which is a very Bad Thing. .5 is the current version.
The next version will be the first major post-SDK release, and vastly improves on .5.
It will be coming quite soon.

This line only remake is total rubbish I've ever seen!!! Fuck off!!! --CZghost
Q4Max works great. Q4max provides the hope of OSP/CPMA quality in Q4 online gaming.
But don't take my word for it, there is no downside to trying it yourself.

Download the SteamFish Updater, file named Q4MaxUpdater.exe . Place in your Quake4 directory.
Execute it.

Download the Q4max 0.7 (for Windows only atm) files, named pak070.pk4 and pak070w.pk4. Place in your Q4Max directory.
One issue impeding the democratic sorting of what Mod or Map (or server) that draws the players, is the unpleasantness of not finding a server.
I have yet to hear why the list of Q4 servers is spotty and incomplete.
The in-game browser and also All Seeing Eye browser do not detect the servers reliably.
Here is a list of Q4 servers that I scan regularly. I am sure that there are plenty more good servers out there, but those will never be found until the browsers start working.
Enterng IP addresses explicitly is the only way to find them.
Once these are added to All Seeing Eye, then these are scanned reliably by the ASE browser.
Note that if you have added a server to ASE, then that server will appear to be known to ASE from your point of view. Don't fool yourself, everyone else still can not see it.

Note to Q4max server admins:
There are two file system variables that need to be set.
If either one is missing, then the client loads the autoexec.cfg from Q4base, not the autoexec.cfg from Q4max.
UZA, above, does it right. Gamecloud does it wrong.
These are:
+set fs_game Q4Max
+set fs_game_base Q4max

Just FYI, due to the problems involved in running 0.7, we've moved back to the official 0.5 release and wait impatiently for the official new release.SturmUSA wrote: home page: http://www.uzaclan.net/index.shtml
