That is actually a myth - the trick is to place a save point (you pick up a portable one in the crater, remember?) just before you decide on your party to fight Genova. You have the option to decide who goes when you try to jump onto the floating steps down. Up until that point it is possible to get back up to your airship.
Failing that, the crashed Gelinka (the plane underwater) is arguably the best place to fight if you can get to it - just be sure you have a ribbon on your character with 4xCut: I forgot and Cloud killed both party members then himself after he got confused.
