I don't think there centralized Q4 map reviewing is happening anywhere yet. esreality has some articles now and then (swelt posts his maps there).

Someone should start emailing the guys at lvl to make it happen. :icon28:

Tigger-oN: Not at this stage and most likely not at all. The main issue is time, followed server limits and the fact Mand0g and I pay for the server.

If someone was to pay for the server (about US$100 per month) I would seriously consider Q4 support at ..::LvL.

How can they be paying $100 a month to run their site? That's ridiculous.

The files aren't served directly. So what's up with that? Are they also running custom game servers from the box?

How ignorant! :o They have a lvlworld mirror for _every_ map. Filefront, MHGaming, ..::LvL. In that order. There is a limit on the amount of traffic you can generate there though. I was downloading a lot of maps i didn't have yet once and it suddenly said i should start playing some maps first before downloading more. :icon25:

I never spotted the LvL mirror.

Bandwidth bill makes sense then.

I don't see why they couldn't just get rid of the LVL mirrors and simply depend on the community mirrors.

Yeah it's mainly about the reviews and screenshots...

Two reasons

1 : not everyone likes to be 'assalted' by adverts and logins etc... etc...
2 : relying on the 'community' also means you're 'dependant' on them as well. I'm sure we've all found dead links left-right-and-centre when looking for something that should be pretty straight forward
(3 : Independance. They can do what they want to the site)

If it came to life-or-death is the site staying up or not I would say get rid of the internal mirrors and rely on community ones. Maybe not at this direct moment but when or if the time comes I hope they take this approach. I dunno why they dropped fileplanet altogether, which used to be a major mirror for the maps on their site. I guess it's because people haven't uploaded that many newer maps to fp and have relied on those other sources.

Yes, these are all very good reasons to host your own downloads, but the question is, are these reasons worth $100/month and not having Q4 on LVL? IMO they aren't. I'd much rather them not have to pay $100/month and have Q4 reviews and then I'd deal with the extra ads and dead links.

Basically the reason they dropped fileplanet is because it sucks. :)

Well I tend to agree, especially when the public mirrors offered at filefront are almost always wait-free. :)

I guess fileplanet finally got 'too big for their own sake' which is why getting a 1mb file from them takes 40mins on average. :p

Just skim pages like ESReality, planetquake, quake4.filefront.com, the q3w LEM forum, etc. :)

This site is okay in theory, but there's no reviews, and many maps don't have screenshots. (Of course, for some of them, you'd wish there weren't.)

I mirror the downloads so it saves on bandwidth and I'm hoping that the reviews from the players will come into play more. As i find the maps I try and list it.
Oh ya, keep in mid every mirror is a direct link to the download, not another click here thingy.

Your site has some pretty good stuff with the screenies for each map.. but it's still not a ":LvL:", exactly.

Have the days of map reviews kinda gone? We used to have halfway decent reviews, written by pretty much ruthlessly honest people, back in the day..

It is so far way too much work to find good Q4 maps made by people who actually know how.
