Dumb question about cgi video in games

Post by tnf »

Why do pre-rendered videos tend to look better (IMHO) on the xbox with my HDTV than 99% of the pre-rendered game stuff I see on my PC? Even with a loaded computer, I see hitches in pre-rendered stuff on the PC at times...and it never looks as "smooth" in terms of the picture quality.

i'd think that the game itself and the pre-rendered bits are optimized for that platform, unlike a pc which is totally dependent on what you can afford to stuff under the hood.

You mean compression artifacts and the like? I think via PC you can notice these more because of the higher quality monitor image vs a standard tv and the fact you are sitting a lot closer to the screen.

Also.. as I'm sure you know, games on the Xbox only have to work on one system spec, which means they can push the system to the absolute limit. Shit for PC has to work on all sorts of different configs so shit has to get cut here and there and the end product doesn't often look as good as it could.

I never saw any aliasing or pixelating on my old CRT, and then I got a LCD and bam!, behold the jagged edges.

You need a pretty high-end LCD HD TV to get the same sharpness as on a computer LCD monitor. Plus, you need to run it at the LCD's native resolution, otherwise it will downsample or upsample and interpolate the pixels, giving you a smoother (but blurrier) image.
