My brother's getting a digital camera from the wife for xmas.
What mega pixel do you recommend and what kind?

I was going to recommend at least a 5 megapixel with optical zoom, and probably by Cannon.

Probbaly around $300ish Canadian.

It depends on how avid of a photographer he is. If it's just casual "trips to the in-laws" use, then he won't even need 5.0mpxl. 4.0 is probably fine.
If he wants enlargements, then go for 5.0 or higher.

Canon digicams are great, but check the red-eye quality. That's the only problem mine has. Typically, you don't even need to use a flash with digital cameras, so it's not such a big deal.

Actually my Kodak 2 MP has redeye reduction.
I though all cameras now would have this feature.

Oh, it has red-eye reduction. It just doesn't work well. I've used some other Canons that have the same problem. Like I said though, I don't typically use the flash, so it's not a big problem.

To remove red eye you need either a secondary light source on the camera (usually a little lamp that lights up before u take the pic) or just get an external flash, so it will be a lot higher than the lens.

With mine, it flashes once, then on the second flash it takes a picture.
I think it just helps close the retina to reduce the red eye effect.

Yeah, that's what mine does. I think the time between the flashes is too short, so it doesn't have much of an effect.

My personal opinion:

Stick with either Canon, nikon, or Olympus. 3 megapixels for the casual photographer, 4 megapixels for the enthusiast, and 5 megapixels for the avid enthusiast, 8+ megapixels for professionals.

red eye is caused by the camera catching a glimpse of inner demons that the naked eye normally cannot see.
