As reported by Dow Jones last night based upon a presentation at the CSFB Annual Technology Conference, the 40,000 unit figure has left pundits flabbergasted. If launch supply estimates from American Technology Research are accurate, that would mean that 10% of all Xbox 360 consoles sold in the US were either sold or resold through eBay.
Dunno if the same thing will happen with ps3 as right now a bunch of dads are being buggered by their kids during crimbo for the 'hot new console on the street' which consequently is hard to come on the street
and I, like a lot of others, am considering getting multpile ps3's...but does the 360s xmas release give it a major advantage in terms of ebay sell-ability?
Depending on the release date of the PS3, it could be a good idea to reserve a couple for ebay. If its crimbo time you can bet your ass its going to sell more than "random X date".
worst case scenario with the ps3 thing - you sell them back at the price you paid, and aren't out anything. I don't see not being able to unload them at the MSRP.
do you think Sony will do anything (can they even?) to try and prevent the hoarding of them by folks for ebay sales at 2x or more the actual price?
If you release something in supplies much lower than demand, and on top of that, do it right at the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, then you are going to have this kind of situation no matter what the product is.
The supply/demand ratio has a lot to do with it, but I'm positive the holiday season frenzy added fuel to the fire as well.
If you want to try stocking a few PS3's when they come out, then you'll be betting on the fact that Christmas didn't have much impact, and that Sony will under-saturate the market like Microsoft did.
I'm getting a PS3 for sure... You'd be an idiot not to capitalize on something like that if you have foreknowledge of shortages. Every recent console I can think of has been available in short supply at launch time. The opportuity far outweighs the risk

right, or just return them to the store where you bought them. I think I read an article that also said that 40,000 units were sold on Ebay. They said thats about 10% of all x360s.

What day is PS3 suppose to come out?
Atleast another year. They havn't even got a working prototype yet nor have they settled on their hardware.
oops...i had "similar" in there but somehow i editted it out.
its probably the same article actually (from digg?)
regardless i was answering tnf's question: "
like to see what % of 360s ended up on eBay being auctioned off." obviously i wasnt the only one to not fully read the first post

another full year? so xmas 2006? i was thinking somewhere around middle of next year. perhaps they're not going to do that because theres not much of a market at that time?
I don't see what the point of the article is, but it's obviously written by the guy who was #4 in the preorder line of a store that only got three units. The author is trying to knock ebay saying it's not a 'legitimate' channel and it's been 'exploited.' All I see are people exercising their market power. Go cry me a river...

It doesn't matter whenever they release it because people will buy it in droves because it's a "ps3." But it's much easier to hype your product during xmas, and I don't think it will be possible for people to ebay their ps3s for 2x if they released in March

Nintendo are hitting the summer market next year with the rev and I think Sony would be a fool to launch against that. Sure it would sell more but i'd bet magazines would be more interested in the new way to play games with the rev rather than talking about some old rehased games with better graphics ala 360.
