He's probably correct, but as to why he doesn't understand the decision to go to war? Well, I guess he missed the memo in '96.

Man, that's just sad to see it all laid out in black and white.

one of the most embarrassing things from a purely US foreign policy wonk perspective about the iraq war is how it provides a graphic demonstration of US weakness
i mean, when you look at the list of countries the US has conducted some kind of war with (or gotten involved militarily, such as nicaragua or somalia), it's a list of weak, mostly 3rd world nations
at some point everyone is going to notice that the US is fundamentally rather weak, and that the paper stats regards military budget, technology and global reach are simply hiding that uncomfortable fact

Which one? The kiddy fiddler or the one with mob connections?Jackal wrote:You know goof, if this shit pisses you off so much then why don't you fucking do something about it? Instead posting on a message board with a bunch of nerd why don't you take off the apron and go out and do something. Write a fucking letter to your congressman.

No we're more like the cops coming down on gang violence. Somebody's got to do it, and we're the only ones stepping up to the plate. Shame on the rest of the UN, bunch of pussies and sellouts. Of course we "appear" to be a bully, but that's just because other countries have their heads up their asses and aren't helping to do the right thing, Britain is the only exception. All those who think we are just being imperialistic just remember we are spending billions to try and fix a sector of the world that breeds hatred and violence toward everyone who isn't like them. I'd much rather not have to spend my tax dollars doing for other countries what they failed to do for themselves, but it's what needs to be done for the long term to not end up as wwIII.Mr.Magnetichead wrote:America is the bully of the world.

The best way to avoid WW3 is to start it yourself then?MidnightQ4 wrote:No we're more like the cops coming down on gang violence. If you believe everything you just posted, you should spend some time reading about current events.
It might not hurt for you to check out something like this as well:

I read some van Creveld shit once... I think it was about German supplies during WWI.
I think he's missing the fact that during Vietnam, the Americans only really ever held Saigon. We made the same mistake the British made during our Revolutionary War trying to hang on to cities when the people in the countryside were the real problem. One's power when holding a city is thinly veiled since once the occupier feel secure enough to leave it, the locals who supported the occupier revert back to whoever they supported to begin with.
The teleology of van Creveld's argument is odd for a historian, claiming that history is destined to repeat. There are similarities from event to event, but his prediction is just an educated guess.
