why wouldent you just buy a replacement GPU cooler? they are easy to install.
or for that matter, pony up some money and get a new Gfx card that is worth mentioning.

Either oil the fan or buy a new fan.Haystacker17 wrote:ok my other halfs pc's gfx card (ati 9600) just starting making a very loud noise ( it was the fan ) is it safe to remove the fan or does the card need it?

Oil computer parts? No way. It will run quietly again for a while but will very likely fail after that and overheat your video processor (GPU), resulting in instability or a dead card.Tormentius wrote:Either oil the fan or buy a new fan.
I don't know how hot a Radeon 9600 runs, but a GF FX5700 of a friend of mine died recently because the fan failed.
Re: GFX card hell
Last time i did that was about two years ago, old GF 2 mx fan still runs as a happy puppy. OTOH if you'r going to lub the old fan first blow out all the dust, second use a very thin oil or silicon spray.Oeloe wrote:Oil computer parts? No way. Oh and no 9600 doesn't run very hot but still needs some good cooling (halve of the plain 9600's are passivly cooled, all pro's are activly cooled).
btb, pitty you don't live in the NL, the mem of my old 9600pro recently died (oc mem with 15% for 2 yrs is not healthy), so I have a zalman zm80c (inverted tosti iron) up on offer.

Yeah that explains why the dozen or so cards or case fans that either myself or friends have oiled are all still working just fine...:icon27:.Oeloe wrote:Oil computer parts? No way. Btw, if you are going to oil it, you will need to remove the Fan from the assembly ( some times a task within its self ), remove the sticker that is on the back of the fan, and you will eather see a plastic plug, or a hole with the baring exposed..
remove the plug, and Drip some Fine machine oil, Watch oil, or somethign equilent. DONT USE Wd40 OR ANYTHING LIKE IT
Now wile the sticker is still removed, spin the fan wile you are still holding it upside down, you will feel it smoothen out continue this for a few mins,
Clean the back surface, and re-apply the plug and sticker.
install back to the HSF, plug in and you SHOULD be good to go
persioanlly i use Sewing machine oil.
edit: or to avoid this mess, just spend the few notes to get a VGA replacement that will cool the thing beter... win win? especally if you dont have the oil.
