WoW is seriously a great game
I'd recommend it to anybody. Honestly, trolling is so goddamn easy and hilarious... its no wonder its number 1.
I quit after playing for a year. It's a good game but if you want to do any of the fun/new content you need to have a 40 man raid.
With all the downtime that occurs from corpse running while learning a new 40 man raid instance, it can be a bitch because you spend 30 minutes getting everyone organized and repeating the strat so everyone does their job correctly and then end up wiping in 30 seconds just to do it all over again.
For casual play it can be a blast, but if you're one of those people who has to do everything in a game then prepare yourself to invest countless hours in trying to get the best items. Of course only to find that you can never do that because it's an endless cycle because they put in better items that are barely better just to keep your attention span hanging by a thread so you'll continue forking that $15/month.

I'll never play this game because I already waste too much time on quake 3 and 4 and some single player games plus a little bit of real life. Never been into rpgs much anyway, and I can't be arsed to learn what it's all about. No time for learning curves and teamwork or whatever's involved.
I'm sure it's awesome though, several friends keep nagging me to play it but I tell them " no goddamn you, NO!"

I quit WoW because I was not satisfied playing the game unless I could level quickly and buy cooler and cooler shit, which required an exorbitant amount of time to do.
But I had lots of fun with buying/selling stuff at auctions. It's like ebay except you don't have to deal with fedex.
