least likely doesn't necessarily equate to unlikely though

What would the US do if the rest of the world collectively decided to do just that? Setting up an alternate Internet is mostly a matter of firing up new root DNS servers. The necessary infrastructure is already there.stocktroll wrote:or just get off OUR internet

Clearly some nation should try. I suspect that it would fall flat and embarrass the hell out of the country.^misantropia^ wrote:What would the US do if the rest of the world collectively decided to do just that? They havent removed all the porn or dodgy warez sites, so no complaints from me.

No, but there has been US government pressure to force all porn sites onto .xxx domains.horton wrote:i would much rather be on the internet controlled by Americans, than something controlled by China or whatever other cunty nation wants to censor it.

And since obscenity is defined as "I know it when I see it" then the line could be pretty much drawn wherever.
Here's a plausible scenario:
Sites with information about abortion or whatever else the American government decides it doesn't like, could be forced to take .xxx or some other dodgy sounding domain. Then business and educational networks, and maybe even ISPs, are pretty much forced by popular, misinformed opinion, to block that domain completely. Then, politically sensitive information on certain issues has been effectively censored (not to mention all the pr0n).
Maybe that wouldn't happen in today's political climate. But things change quickly and if you have the internet controlled by any one country then the door is left open for stuff like that.
