what the hell does that have to do with about anything? The day isn't about what's happening now.Turbine wrote:How are they fighting for freedom right now, exactly?
Not many here love Bush and pretty much everyone realizes that Iraq is a fucking debacle. But it is getting very old to see the same old, same old shit being interjected into threads that really aren'tr about that.

fucking Amen.
I have a grandpa who served in Korea....didn't fight, he went over after the war. I also have an uncle who was in the Air Force for quite some time before being honorably discharged. Did he fight? Nope, spent most of his time hanging out in Europe.
Does that really matter? Absofuckinglutely not. They trained, sacrificed time and energy.
To all the vets out there....thank you for having the courage to do whatever you do, or did, regardless of the reason behind getting into it.

Too bad there now fighting a war that they really shouldn't be.
I hope they all come home soon.
Not to turn this into a political broo-haha, but really I don't understand why so many ppl think we shouldn't have gone to war. I mean to me it makes complete sense, but I think I am looking at the long term effect, and not the 2000 or so soldiers who have died. I don't like our kids dying anymore than the next guy, but as many ppl died on 9/11 in just one day. Can we really say that it makes sense to wait for it to happen again? Here's the reasons why the war is a good thing, that maybe some ppl haven't considered:
1. The decision to go to war was based on Iraq not cooperating with UN inspectors. For 2 months they dicked around, all the while they could have had WMDs. They may not have, but the fact that they were not cooperating was an act of war according to the UN policy. The US was the only member of the UN who had the balls to take action and enforce the policy that all the other nations had set forth. If two months of deliberating on the issue wasn't long enough, then how long is long enough? Should we have waited until we were attacked by potential WMDs? The potential threat was way too great to wait it out and see.
2. Whether we are getting rid of any terrorists or not with the war in Iraq today, we certainly are setting up the climate in the middle east to be one that doesn't support and harbor terrorism 20-40 years from now. That really is the point of the whole war. It's not gas, or getting revenge on Saddam, or whatever else. It is the long term effect that changing the middle east will have. We have to change the culture of those countries or we will never get rid of the islamic fundamentalist ideals, some of which are to kill sinners and be rewarded in the afterlife. Sinners being anyone who doesn't follow their retarded religion. Even the president of Iran came out and said this recently, fully admitting that ridding the gaza strip of jews was his country's main mission. We need to change that whole area of the world, and Iraq is the perfect place to start. Basically we need to weed out the religious values these people have by modernizing their culture and giving them something else to do besides preach hatred.

Apparently having to live each day wondering if you are going to get blown up, or nuked, or infected with anthrax, etc. is ok? They are fighting for the american way of life as we know it. How can that not be clear? Just because they aren't kicking some taliban asshole out of your back yard, don't think they aren't fighting for your freedom to go on living the way you do. Just imagine what would happed if we had a pussified president who one day publically announced that we will not pursue terrorists, nor will we do our due diligence to ensure that hostile countries are not building WMDs? What do you think would happen in 15-30 years? We would be in deep deep shit. And not just us, the world in general. It would be basically WW3, muslims vs everyone else.Turbine wrote:How are they fighting for freedom right now, exactly?
Please start a new thread if you want to discuss the ins and outs of the war.
Personally, I'm not a fan of the military, mainly because it's too dominant and we spend too much money on it. Also, I sometimes feel soldiers' intentions aren't always in the right place...
Nevertheless, I think recognition of people who put their lives on the line for others in any situation is important, in every area of society. :icon14:
