A good friend of mine who was a paratrooper in Afghanistan is leaving again Tuesday. He's headed to Germany for a couple months, then on to Iraq.

I'm hanging out with him as much as possible before he leaves, and I sure as hell hope he makes it home the same as when he left. Or as close to it as possible.

Today, the Veterans Affairs Department lists just eight veterans as receiving disability benefits or pension compensation from service in World War I. It says a few dozen other veterans of the war probably are alive, too, but the government does not keep a comprehensive list.
