Quake 4 online too much of a hassle
Not necessarily, noobs playing noobs means they have a place to learn the game themselves without being chained. If they stick with it, they will eventually merge into the community over time. The smarter admins will learn good practices as well.Oeloe wrote:I knew it; taking away the quaker's freedom to tweak his config in order to have a more even battle field is SHIT. It means more segregation within the Q4 community - experienced players only playing with experience players and noobs only playing with noobs, because knowledge of Q4 server settings is required in order to setup a decent server. With Q3 it's more straightforward (dunno if it was right after it's release).
Though don't expect every server to have your preferences. Most will always have bad configs. Public servers are always a dice shoot. Especially in new games, before you find the ones which suit your taste.
I would like you to develop you first 2 sentences more fully since noobs always play on noob servers. I'm assuming you are hoping for a steeper learning curve, which I question. I think most learn at their own pace, and may play a game for years before learning that tweaking can help their game.
As an admin in another game, which I have been playing 3 years now, I am shocked when a player I know makes a strafe jump combo and is accused by another player of cheating. The second player often has some experience as well, though more moderate. Inevitably, I end up saying to the latter individual that the mentioned player played quake3 for X years, knows, and has practiced the jumps in this game. And should shut up.
Frankly, far more more worrying is that what you say may mean that the only "new" players are old guys who played ages ago. They have been playing other games and come back to relive their youth, and that there isn't any real new blood of all. Because, I'm having trouble convincing my friends who played q3 "in the day" to play. And those who haven't won't touch it. Though they may like the single player.
My only disappointment in the game is that so many can't appreciate it's purity. But would rather camp someone's spawn in a tank. Though that is a failure of their character, and not one of the game.
Lastly, I assume that ftp downloads are broken as well?
Heh. I was banned by a virus member for 'spamming' the nailgun. Especially good since I *know* the guys from previous Quakes, he just didn't know the name I was playing under. Awesome.
Idiot server admins indeed
But yeah, the whole custom downloads thing desperately needs to get fixed. Searching for non empty, non full, non password protected servers NOT running custom stuff, and I come up with a tiny handful of open servers. Pretty bad. That's ignoring that sometimes the ones open have like a 16 player cap, which is wayyyyy too many for the maps.

NO! LISTEN SERVERS ARE FOR SEASONED VETS!Tormentius wrote:Wtf are you babbling about. I really hope you're right:( It's an optimistic view. I like that though.pF.arQon wrote:Eraser - seriously, think of it as "Q4TEST", because that's what it IS as far as the state/quality of the MP goes ATM.
I find that looking at it that way helps me deal with most of the frustration while we wait for the "real" 1.0 release in a month or so.
