An exciting read

Post by [xeno]Julios »

an excerpt:
The scariest tech development of all is that the insurgents have learned how to make shaped-charged IEDs. To understand why shaped charges are such a powerful weapon, we have to go into the incredibly cool world of explosive physics. I love this stuff. I mean, what red-blooded American boy didn't experiment with explosives? The only reason I ever opened my Chem book was to see if it mentioned TNT or dynamite in the index. (It didn't-goddamn hippie teachers.) And naturally I used the local wildlife, like toads and bees, in my experiments with the killing power of firecrackers.

Meh... It's an interesting read but not surprising. It sounds like he's making a simple strategy complex.

This type of "IED" has been researched, and a lot of top military commanders in the US have decided that they must be coming from outside Iraq. One country that is known to use devices built exactly the same way is Israel, although there are possibly others as well.

edit: Don't really have time to read the article right now, but saw your quote and thought I'd comment.

I thought the basic idea was decades old...

The basic idea of IED's is very old, but the specific type of shaped charges that have been used in Iraq more and more recently was pioneered by the Israeli military from what I've read.

Yer, i loved how he got suspended for threatening to burn this one guy's vineyard, Spartan style :olo:

I think it was last issue he was put on unpaid leave, the neocon he threatened wrote an angry letter saying he actually had a vineyard and that it had actually been torched recently, or something. If i recall correctly.

Funny stuff.
