wanna know what the numbers mean?
click
they're gps co-ordinates of the island... the co-ordinates place to a location in the pacific ocean, north east of australia.
what else do you want to know?

the island is a research site right, hanso foundation proves that. the numbers are the location of the island in the world, so the only question remaining is, what were they researching?
the foundation site talks about research of practically every paranormal aspect of the world, so they were researching paranormal activity. my guess is the island has some wierd ass powers due to its location in the world, the hanso foundation was researching this but they went too far, fucked something up, and created some kind of "issue" which the computer rectifies, but the issue takes constant maintenance.
the ultimate question is, why is the island so paranormal. this will answer what hanso was doing there, why the dharma project was setup and what they did which makes them have to punch numbers into a computer

Sure, that all sounds good but is still just a theory. So far it seems that the island is a research site but we don't know that for sure.
On the film they talk about the psychologist Skinner. You ever hear about the experiments Skinner did involving training a bunch of rats to continually push a button? Sound familiar?
Also, why are these people on the island and why are all their past lives intersecting? What about the fact that the same people keep showing up in different people's flashbacks (Locke's boss and Hurley's boss for example)?

One running theory is that all the people are involved in some sort of "downloaded life" experiment. Basically this means that Jack isn't really a doctor, Kate isn't really a criminal, Sawyer isn't really a conman, etc. The reason certain people keep popping up is that they are sort of "stock footage" which get's reused amongst each subject.
This isn't necessarily what I believe is going on, but it is an interesting theory.

the island is definately a research site, and why the button needs to be pushed etc, is part and tail of whatever went on there... what i didn't like about the hanso website is the extra-terrestrial bullshit... man, i don't need another x-files

I believe they said they did "psychological experients" in the orientation video, not paranormal.
Skinner was still big in the 60's and 70's (before proper cognitive psychology took over), when this Dharma initiative supposedly started.
I bet this entire thing is a big psychological experiment performed by a powerful and unscrouplous organization.
