Homework3World: Please help me find a modern Romantic...

Post by Guest »

Its for the damn English class, so I need to find a modern era (after 1960) poem or a song that covers the romanic themes like nature and beauty. He played some sort of song by Sting that perfectly qualifies for this, but we can't take that one. If anyone listens to this sort of music, please suggest me something, I'm so fucked.

How about Love?
Strangelove

There'll be times
When my crimes
Will seem almost unforgivable
I give in to sin
Because you have to make this life liveable
But when you think I've had enough
From your sea of love
I'll take more than another riverfull
And I'll make it all worthwhile
I'll make your heart smile

Strangelove
Strange highs and strange lows
Strangelove
That's how my love goes
Strangelove
Will you give it to me
Will you take the pain
I will give to you
Again and again
And will you return it

There'll be days
When I'll stray
I may appear to be
Constantly out of reach
I give in to sin
Because I like to practise what I preach
I'm not trying to say
I'll have it all my way
I'm always willing to learn
When you've got something to teach
And I'll make it all worthwhile
I'll make your heart smile

Pain will you return it
I'll say it again -- pain
Pain will you return it
I won't say it again

I give in
Again and again
I give in
Will you give it to me
I give in
I'll say it again
I give in

I give in
Again and again
I give in
That's how my love goes
I give in
I'll say it again
I give in

I don't think thats it duffman, but thanks for the suggestion. The poem needs to have nature imagery in it and shit.

By the way, I forgot to mention why its so hard for me to find a Romantic poem, is the fact that it has to be modern, written after 1960, so I can't just take one of the poems written in 17xx-18xx which actually was the romantic era.

Btw, I have to write a 750 word essay on the fucking poem  so I guess it has to be deep or at least long :paranoid:

Pocahontas Soundtrack Lyrics

- Colors of the Wind Lyrics

[Pocahontas]
You think I'm an ignorant savage
And you've been so many places
I guess it must be so
But still I cannot see
If the savage one is me
Now can there be so much that you don't know?
You don't know ...

You think you own whatever land you land on
The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim
But I know every rock and tree and creature
Has a life, has a spirit, has a name

You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like you
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
You'll learn things you never knew you never knew

Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned?
Can you sing with all the voices of the mountains?
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?

Come run the hidden pine trails of the forest
Come taste the sunsweet berries of the Earth
Come roll in all the riches all around you
And for once, never wonder what they're worth

The rainstorm and the river are my brothers
The heron and the otter are my friends
And we are all connected to each other
In a circle, in a hoop that never ends

How high will the sycamore grow?
If you cut it down, then you'll never know
And you'll never hear the wolf cry to the blue corn moon

For whether we are white or copper skinned
We need to sing with all the voices of the mountains
We need to paint with all the colors of the wind

You can own the Earth and still
All you'll own is Earth until
You can paint with all the colors of the wind
How about that? Or perhaps Elton John's "Circle of Life" off the Lion King soundtrack.

Check out a band called The One AM Radio. He uses nature a lot in his lyrics:

http://www.myjavaserver.com/~mike001/lyrics/oneamradio/

example:
Untied

there's nothing to hold us down. we'll cut the strings. we'll kiss the ground goodbye. we'll catch up a western breeze that eddies us up past the trees to sky. let the line slip free. the ballast is your memory. let it drop to the ground. we'll always be around. mother to her baby said we're never lost. we're never dead. we fly. our thoughts get spun like silken threads, cast down below like sighs. i told you baby, once; i said, we never die, we simply get untied.

:olo::olo::olo::olo::olo::olo::olo::olo::olo::olo::olo:

duffman you sent me into hysteria with that pocahontas shit lol

speaking of hysteria...def leppard is on the radio

And this song talks about nature or something
CHORUS x2
Take me down to the paradise city
Where the grass is green
And the girls are pretty
Take me home (Oh, won't you please take me home)

Just an urchin livin' under the street
I'm a hard case that's tough to beat
I'm your charity case
So by me somethin' to eat
I'll pay you at another time
Take it to the end of the line

Rags to riches
Or so they say
You gotta
Keep pushin' for the fortune and fame
You know it's, it's all a gamble
When it's just a game
You treat it like a capitol crime
Everybody' doin' their time

CHORUS x2

Strapped in the chair of the city's gas chamber
Why I'm here, I can't quite remember
The surgoen general say's it's hazardous to breathe
I'd have another cigarette
But I can't see
Tell me that you're gonna believe

CHORUS x2

So far away x4

Capitain America's been torn apart
Now he's a court jester
With a broken heart
He said turn me around
And take me back to the start
I must be losing my mind
"Are you blind?!"
I've seen it all a mllion times

CHORUS x4

I want to go
I want to know
Oh, won't you please take me home

I want to see
Oh, look at me
Oh, won't you please take me home

Take me down to the paradise city
Where the grass is green
And the girls are pretty
Take me home (Oh, won't you please take me home)

Take me down to the paradise city
Where the grass is green
And the girls are pretty
Oh, won't you please take me home

Take me down
Oh yeah
Beat me down
Oh, won't you please take me home

I want to see
Oh, look at me
Oh, won't you please take me home

I want to see
Boy, I'm gonna be mean
Oh, oh take me home

Take me down to the paradise city
Where the grass is green
And the girls are pretty
Oh, won't you please take me home

I want to go
I want to know
Oh, won't you please take me hooooooome
Baby
That will get you an A

I KNOW I KNOW THIS ONE IS PERFECT SERIOUSLY
The Trees

There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with the trees,
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas.

The trouble with the maples,
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light.
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made.
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade.

There is trouble in the forest,
And the creatures all have fled,
As the maples scream "Oppression!"
And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights.
"The oaks are just too greedy;
We will make them give us light."
Now there's no more oak oppression,
For they passed a noble law,
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw.
hell yes it's Rush!

This sounds like a frustrating assignment because it would be hard to differentiate between modern day musicians. I tried google and I cannot seem to find any modern era romantics, as no one uses that term anymore. Perhaps it would be better to find musicians that have a song that relates to the themes of romantics.

Also I just found a band called “New Romantics”, but it appears all they have is instrument music.

What about Pablo Neruda? Most of his stuff is love-romantic which I understand youre not looking for, but he has some other stuff as well.

Check it:
Water

Everything on the earth bristled, the bramble
pricked and the green thread
nibbled away, the petal fell, falling
until the only flower was the falling itself.
Water is another matter,
has no direction but its own bright grace,
runs through all imaginable colors,
takes limpid lessons
from stone,
and in those functionings plays out
the unrealized ambitions of the foam.
only thing is that he wrote before and after 1960. so figure out when he wrote that and youre set. or find another nature-romance poem of his?

Romanticism is more than just about nature. It's a mindset, sort of like pantheism, where nature plays an important part in the understanding of self.
yea i've too been kind of thinking about maybe a new sig but sort of haven't come to quite a decision yet

This is a romantic song about Finland:

Chorus: Finland, Finland, Finland.
The country where I want to be,
Pony trekking or camping,
Or just watching TV.
Finland, Finland, Finland,
It's the country for me.
Verse: You're so near to Russia,
So far from Japan.
Quite a long way from Cairo,
Lots of miles from Vietnam.
Chorus: Finland, Finland, Finland.
The country where I want to be,
Eating breakfast or dinner,
Or snack lunch in the hall.
Finland, Finland, Finland,
Finland has it all.
Verse: You're so sadly neglected,
And often ignored,
A poor second to Belgium,
When going abroad.
Chorus: Finland, Finland, Finland.
The country where I quite want to be,
Your mountains so lofty,
Your treetops so tall.
Finland, Finland, Finland,
Finland has it all.

Repeat: Finland, Finland, Finland.
The country where I quite want to be,
Your mountains so lofty,
Your treetops so tall.
Finland, Finland, Finland,
Finland has it all.

Fade: Finland has it all...

Love You To Death by Type O Negative

In her place one hundred candles burning
as salty sweat drips from her breast
her hips move and I can feel what they're saying, swaying
They say the beast inside of me's gonna get ya, get ya,get...

Black lipstick stains her class of red wine
I am your servant, may I light your cigarette?
Those lips smooth, yeah I can feel what you're saying, praying
They say the beast inside of me's gonna get ya, get ya, get...

I beg to serve, your wish is my law
Now close those eyes and let me love you to death
Shall I prove I mean what i'm saying, begging
I say the beast inside of me's gonna get ya, get ya, get..

Let me love you too
Let me love you to death

Hey am I good enough for you?
Hey am i good enough for you?
Am I?
Am I?
Am I good enough
for you?

------------

Be My Druidess by Type O Negative

Be my druidess
Be my everything
Be my druidess
Be mine

Around the Pyre, a circle of thirteen
Thoughout these woods, ecstatic screams
I look deeply into your eyes
I smell your hair, caress your thighs

Now we'll make love by fire light
A blaze so high it lights the night
Long fingernails dug in my skin
Yourself so wet invites me in

Our lust increased feeds desire
As we combust, yeah we on fire
I feel you shake so deep inside
O oh scream my name and hold me tight

I'll do anything to make you come

-----------

Green Man by Type O Negative

Spring won't come, the need of strife
To struggle to be freed from hard ground
The evening mists that creep and crawl
Will drench in the dew and so drown

I'm the green man
The green man

Sol in prime sweet summertime

Cast shadows of doubt on my face
A midday sun, its caustic hues
Refracting within the still lake

Autumn in her flaming dress
Of orange, brown, gold fallen leaves
My mistress of the frigid night
I worship pray to on my knees

Winter's breath of filthy snow
Befrosted paths to the unknown
Have my lips turned true purple
Life is coming to an end
So says me, me wiccan friend
Nature coming full circle

I'm the green man
The green man

---------------

Haunted by Type O Negative

A swollen sun melting at the horizon
Between the sheets I wait for her to come

A living flame, impossible to resist
Burning me deep with every bite, kiss and lick

I'm haunted
I'm haunted
I'm haunted (by her)

Invades my sleep with tumescent intentions
Hades I'm sure must be missing a demon

I hate the morning
I hate the morning

From the panes a green mist swirls
Is it a shadow of reflection
This apparition in moon beams bathed
A voice like wind through trees beckons
Cool rain on hot summer stone
The odor fills my presence
Of freshly dug grave and deatha nd night
These things are her essence
Nocturnal mistress, spirit lover
your mouth of wine and woodsmoke taste
My goddess of the violet twilight
You are lust incarnate
In the sweat of my bed
The eastern sky hints of dawning
Alone and awake but exhausted I lie
Oh how I hate the morning

I hate the morning (light)
I hate the morning (light)

-----------------

The Forest Of October by Opeth

The memories that now rests in this forest
Forever shadowing the sunrise of my heart
Wings leave their nest at my coming
Swaying away unto the cold glowing sky
Dreaming away for a while
My spirit sighs in peace
Gazing unto the stars
Please, take me there

I am so alone, so cold
My heart is to scarred to glow
I wish the sunrise to come
Take my soul (away)
From this cold, lonely shell
I am free

From the eternal sea I rose
Veiled in darkness on either shore
Lost my pride, lost its glow
For me the sun rose no more

The forest of October
Sleeps silent when I depart
The web of time
Hides my last trace

My blaze travel the last universe
Like the sights of magic
Wrapped in aeons
My mind is one with my soul
I fall alone
While leaves fall from the weeping trees
