Audio types...

Post by tnf »

I just finally got around to getting some speaker stands so I could have my rear channel speaks set up behind the couch. Is there an ideal distance behind you that those things should be positioned, should they be angled in or should the be parallel to the line you are viewing the tv at, etc. etc. etc...

how much space do you have behind the couch?

how far away from the rear wall?

are these monopoles, dipoles, or bipoles?

5.1, 6.1, or 7.1?

how large are they?

these are legitimate questions ;)

its a 5.1 ssytem. They are actually very close to the rear wall (small living room). I've got about 1 inch behind each to the rear wall. As for mono, di, or bi...I have no idea.

Would I find that out by looking up the system's model # online?

monopole is a direct radiator, like a typical speaker. bipole and dipole are special surround speakers. i'll assume you have monopoles.

ideally, slightly behind and out like the diagram below:

this yields very well for movies, ok with music. you'll wind up moving them around a bit, but make sure you set levels before judging sound after placement.
