Sleep paralysis?

Post by shiznit »

I went to sleep at around 2:00am last night and I was falling asleep thinking about ideas and such. All of a sudden as I was laying on my stomach with my head sort of to the side, I felt crushing pressure and top of my body as if the ceiling collapsed and pushed my body into my mattress. It kept increasing, I didn’t feel any pain, however I could not move. I opened my eyes and could see my bedroom very clearly however I also noticed a quick pulsating blue light. It was very clear, I was fully awake.

I thought I heard my heart rate increasing, it was very loud. I felt of little bit of a panic but I realized what was happening so I relaxed and the pressure lifted it off. Then I started concentrating trying to move and I felt the same type of pressure. It was very odd, but it sort of interesting. Finally I turned over, and went back to sleep.

I’ve had similar things happen before but not to this extent, anyone else ever had this? I wonder what causes it? The odd part was that I was in a middle of a semi-dream/idea and I had my eyes open while seeing the dream and feeling this crushing sensation.

I've had similar things happen in a sense...where I am in some half asleep/half awake state. I will feel like I can't breath unless I wake up, and will be consciously trying to wake myself up...but I can't. It's very odd. It's only happened about 6 times in the last 2 years, but each time its something I don't forget. The last time it happened I knew my wife would be kicking me any time to wake me up...but it was like a race against time. I couldn't breath (or so it felt) and I was completely aware that she was next to me...so I just had to wait until she heard me trying to catch my breath and finally woke me up.

It's really odd.

It could be a sign that something really IS happening to you in your sleep. Some people have cases where they'll stop breathing or their heart will stop beating during their sleep, and it's something that shouldn't be taken lightly. If it's continual, maybe you should ask your doctor about it.

It's not true, he might feel like he is unable to breath in reality it's all in his head.

Maybe. But some people actually do have that problem. Another thing it could be is him gagging on his own spit. I've done that a couple times while sleeping on my back.

There are people who have problems breathing in their sleep. Kind of a sleep apnea thing.

Had it a couple of times that I'm mentally awake, but I can't open my eyes or move my body. It's only for a few seconds, but it feels like an eternity.

A lot of folk lore is built into this, the devil, Succbi (or whatever the plural of Succubus is [insert smutty joke]), more recently Alien abductions. From what I've read no-one quite knows why it happens but as eepberries pointed out it *can* mean something *real* is happening.

Personally I get the silent screems, as well as not being able to move, the sensation of which is interpreted as there being a presence in the room or on top of me (as that wiki pic shows).

Fascincating stuff really..

I've had it a few times. Generally I get it when I get up early one day then go to bed really late the next (i.e. get up at 8am one day, go to sleep at 7am the next).

Now I know what it is I can easilly just wake up, and it's pretty fun to an extent. The first time I had it was pretty scary though, I literally did feel I was paralised.

When I get it now though I realise what it is, if you just relax you wake up after a second or so.

I've only got it once. Woke up paralised but fully alert. And then there were the voices... it's like invisible people were right there talking to me. Scared this shit out of me.
yea i've too been kind of thinking about maybe a new sig but sort of haven't come to quite a decision yet

I've had sleep paralysis before. It's not a pleasant thing at all, and freaks you out for some time afterwards. I was concerned that I had gone into a coma or something and was aware but couldn't tell others about it.
